Did you know nearly 9 out of 10 adults struggle with understanding and using their health information? Understanding your health is the first step to taking care of it. We’re committed to clear communication, so every patient feels confident in their care.

We encourage patients to:
- Ask questions if something isn’t clear
- Bring a list of medications and concerns to appointments
- Repeat back instructions to confirm understanding

Together, providers and patients can build confidence, improve communication and make healthy choices.

Central Carolina Hospital Pharmacy is celebrating National Pharmacy Week in heroic fashion!

Using the theme “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility,” the team is commemorating the important role of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in promoting the safe and effective use of medications in the hospital setting. Throughout this week, these superheroes are also working to expand community awareness of the vital role Pharmacy staff play in healthcare delivery.

The highlight of community engagement this year is a charitable giving drive for Christian United Outreach Center of Lee County, where the entire hospital is invited to “Bat-Signal” their support as “Soup-er” givers to community needs.

Now that is really super and heroic!

The Central Carolina Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center has earned two national awards for its clinical excellence, patient satisfaction and wound healing rates for 2024.

The awards were received from Healogics®, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services:

• The Center of Distinction award, which recognizes outstanding clinical outcomes for 12 consecutive months, including a patient satisfaction rate higher than 92 percent.
• The Robert A. Warriner III, MD, Clinical Excellence Award for scoring in the top 10 percent of eligible Healogics® Wound Care Centers® on its clinical excellence measure, which is the Comprehensive Healing Rate weighted by wound mix. This award is named for Dr. Warriner, a pioneer in wound care and former Chief Medical Officer for Healogics.

This is the second consecutive year that Central Carolina’s Wound Care program has received the Robert Warriner Clinical Excellence Award, and the third consecutive year that it has received the Center of Distinction award.

“Our Wound Care Center is rightfully well known for its clinical excellence and patient satisfaction,” said Dave Santoemma, CEO of Central Carolina Hospital. “These awards only serve to reinforce what we and many residents of Lee, Harnett, Chatham and Moore counties already know: that we provide outstanding wound care services.”

The center’s providers, Rebecca Martinez, AGNP-C, Ajay Ajmani, MD, and Todd Sommer, DO, are truly dedicated to the goal of healing every patient who walks through the doors, he said.

Since 2015, the wound care center has offered highly specialized wound care to patients suffering from diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections and other chronic wounds which have not healed in a reasonable amount of time. The center’s wound care experts provide advanced wound care modalities, including negative pressure wound therapy, total contact casting, bio-engineered tissues, biosynthetic dressings and growth factor therapies.

The center also offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which works by surrounding the patient with 100 percent oxygen to help progress the healing of the wound.

“We are proud to receive this third consecutive year of national recognition for delivering quality care to our patients,” said Dellena Sellars, Program Director. “Our entire team of nurses, advanced practitioners and physicians achieves clinical outcomes that give every patient the opportunity to help their chronic wounds and reclaim their quality of life.”

The Central Carolina Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center is among more than 600 wound care centers nationwide that belong to the Healogics network. For more information, visit https://www.centralcarolinahosp.com/wound-care

Congratulations to Megan Magana, RN, of the Emergency Department, who received the DAISY award for her extraordinary effort during an exceptionally challenging shift in the Emergency Department last month.

“Amidst the intensity and emotional weight of the situation, Megan’s leadership, composure and clinical expertise stood out in remarkable ways,” said her co-worker who nominated her for the award. After providing initial care for the patient, “she seamlessly pivoted to supporting other patients in the ED — ensuring no lapse in care during an already overwhelming situation.”

Later she provided a critical, lifesaving intervention for another patient who was brought in.

“Megan’s timing and actions were pivotal,” her co-worker said. “She demonstrated exceptional situational awareness, advanced clinical judgment, and the ability to prioritize and execute care with a calm and confident demeanor. Her contributions were not only technically outstanding but also essential to the overall success” of the team’s efforts to resuscitate a patient that day.

Megan “exemplified the highest standards of nursing excellence during one of the most harrowing cases we’ve encountered,” her co-worker wrote. “Her performance was nothing short of extraordinary, and I strongly recommend her for the DAISY award. She truly was a rock star.”

The DAISY award is given internationally by The DAISY Foundation to honor the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day.

Congratulations, Megan!
