Week 8 of marathon training and just out here crushing it! 👊🏼

I moved up to a new pace group with the and it felt so good. I was nervous to move up even through I knew I was ready for it. Doing something new and going out of your comfort zone is always scary. But, I did it! My breathing was even, I held conversations and kept up with the group. 🙌

Do hard things.

Do the things that scare you.

That’s where the fun is 😉

I think I need to add more color to my outfit. 🤔 What do you think? 😛 🌈

13 miles and all the smiles! 😀

Started today’s run really early which meant I got to watch the sky wake up. It’s such an awesome sight! 🌞

➡️Ran to Iron Horse Bridge, my favorite running spot in Santa Clarita, and my turn around point.

Grateful for today’s run, the views, the waves from fellow runners, my private pick up service at the finish line (😘) and my body’s abilities 🙏

Time to eat! 😋

🌟 Saturday Run Day 🌟

Did laps at the high school parking lot to get these miles - anything to avoid the nearby hill. Which reminds me I’ve got hill repeats on deck next week 😳

Today’s workout:
10 minute jog warmup
50 minute race pace
10 minute cool down

Now, I’ve got the rest of the weekend ahead of me ☀️

🤔 What is a taper week and why is it important to your training?

Tapering means reducing the intensity and volume of your weekly training. Mileage goes down and all effort should be easy at minimum and goal race pace at maximum. This gives your body time to rest, recover and rejuvenate. It sounds counterintuitive but in order to perform at your best, you have to include significant periods of tapering.

You should include a taper week every 3-4 weeks during training and include tapers leading up to any race.

Tapering leading up to race:
5k – 2-5 day taper
10k – 1-2 week taper
Half Marathon – 2-3 week taper
Marathon – 3-4 week taper

It’s week 8 of my training and it’s a taper week. My weekly mileage is going down at least 30%, my long run will be an easy effort 70 minute run and I’ve included a second rest day. This will allow me to recover while setting me up to increase mileage and avoid injury in the weeks to come.

Keep following for more tips and advice to incorporate into your training.

🏅Medal Monday🏅

This medal from for the eRace Racism Challenge is a special one.

I was paired up with a stranger, turned friend, to run 100 miles together in June. We came from different backgrounds, live thousands of miles apart, but agree on a few things: running is therapy and racism is fought by community coming together.

Having done this challenge for the second year, I know we’re making a difference. I’m proud to be part of this community and looking forward to next years challenge!

Progress > Perfection

I repeated this to myself over and over as I kept falling out of tree pose during my morning yoga.

I was getting so frustrated and then modified the pose to stay standing. There, so simple! I didn’t need to get upset with myself for not holding the pose perfectly. I can work on it and over time will get better.

Not perfect, but it’s progress.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. Big or small, every step is progress.

Searching for motivation?

Here’s some honest advice.

If you’re looking for motivation to do something look for it inside yourself.

Don’t put that responsibility on anyone or anything. Honor yourself by sticking to your own goals. As an example, if you signed up for a race, the motivation is to actually do and finish the race. That’s it. Don’t look for outside influences to motivate you – you signed up for the race, hold yourself responsible and accountable. You can replace “race” with anything else you’re trying to accomplish.

I do believe books, podcasts, quotes, role models, friends, etc. can provide motivation. I find motivation in following the running journeys of others. But the weight of it shouldn’t be put on them.

You are your motivation. Your goals are your motivation.

Another way to look for motivation is to throw the concept out completely.

I don’t look for motivation to brush my teeth every day, I just do it because it’s become a habit. Running and working out is part of my habitual routine. When something becomes a habit, a learned skill, a scheduled part of your every day, you don’t need motivation – you just do it. Show up, put in the work, and watch it become a habit. ❤️ 👊🏼
