I first want to introduce myself, My name is Jamie Thibodeaux and I would like to share my sons story…
This may or may not be your first time hearing this but in October 2023, Trenton Thibodeaux was the victim of an auto pedestrian hit and run that changed our lives forever. He was drug while walking by a truck roughly 75 feet before being left in the ditch. Luckily someone saw him and called 911. Since that date his list of diagnosis has grown quickly. He has an acquired brain injury, multiple plates and screws reforming his pelvis, a seizure disorder and worst of all it crushed his renal arteries resulting in end stage kidney failure. This means he only has about 10% kidney function. Trenton is currently doing home dialysis with his mom as his care partner. His treatment schedule currently is 4 times per week for 3 ½ hours per session. This all happened three days before he was to leave for school. And that is when this nightmare began.
For people like Trenton, a kidney transplant can increase the chances of living a longer, healthier life as his only other option is to continue on dialysis for the rest of his life. Dialysis can only do a fraction of what your healthy kidneys do for your body every day. The most recent diagnosis is metabolic bone disease from his imbalances in his body due to kidney failure which make his bones brittle. Trenton recently fell and compression fractured 4 vertebrae in his spine.
Trenton is currently on the national deceased donor waiting list. The average wait time is five years. The only other way to shorten the wait time is to get a transplant from a living donor. Even though most of us are born with two kidneys, we only need one healthy kidney to survive. That means you or someone else you know could save a life by choosing to be a living donor. Kidneys from living donors can even last almost twice as long as kidneys from deceased donors. Of course, a kidney transplant is a major surgery for Trenton and his donor, so it does have risks. However, transplant surgery is generally safe and often successful.
There is no telling when Trenton will get that call from the transplant center that a kidney is available. So, while he waits, we are searching for a living donor on our own. It is not easy but I am reaching out to people closest to me for help. Please share Trenton’s story with others you know. You never know who may be able to help him a find a donor. Please us me know if you would like to learn more about the living donor process and what it takes to become a living kidney donor for me or someone else.
