Most advice and recommendations for building new habits or untangling old ones over indexes on strategies and tactics for “doing.”

Therefore, in this post, I will be sharing with you five coaching questions that I have collected from other methodologies, thought-leaders, and researchers that will help you to invest in the “being” part of your process to intentionally, successfully, and sustainably grow into your desired future self.

Another New Year has arrived. I tend to experience new beginnings as both exciting and frightening. Some parts of me are rejoicing about what is possible and other parts of me are expressing doubt…

I've admired and appreciated Bo Babenko 's commitment to helping people get 1% better each day for quite some time thanks to social media. Therefore, it was a real pleasure and privilege getting to chat with him on his podcast. We talk about finite vs. infinite games, the power of "what" questions vs. "how" questions when interacting with others, and the significance of utilizing the framework of a Compelling Point of View to demand better of yourself and others.

Here's my challenge for you.... See if you can go seven days in a row asking people "what are you feeling?" instead of the habitual "how are you feeling?"

At Market Force, we teach leaders to distinguish between moods and emotions. Moods tend to last longer in duration because they reflect the persistent background conversations you are having with…

I am definitely in favor of practicing a “beginner’s mind,” which this Zen proverb is implying. However, I wonder if an important nuance may be missing, which is that, most of the time, we are never entirely beginners.

Therefore, I recommend that you do not get too carried away with the “empty your cup” mentality and end up treating new learning endeavors like a completely blank slate. One, this is neurologically impossible, and, two, not supportive of your intention to learn. Definitely be curious, open, and flexible, but do so as someone that values the integration of knowledge, expertise, and application.

Emptying and reusing your cup combines the advantages of practicing both a beginner’s mindset and an integrative mindset.

The journey begins... I am officially writing my first book, which will be published by the end of this year.

📚 This stack of books represents the books that will directly and indirectly inspire, inform, and support the book i am writing. (Also, but not featured: becoming a supple leopard, diamond goldfish, winning from within, me myself and us, permission to feel, and linchpin

📚 Who is the book for: the introspective, reflective, curious, and self-improvement facing individuals, who are looking for points of entry to reconsider their assumptions and, more importantly, obtain language that provides them with a handle for better understanding, making meaning, and managing their experiences.

📚 Change I seek to make: Helping people understand how they can own different experiences than just the ones that make up the mainstream status quo and/or underlying assumption for what to think, feel, and how to behave.

Being able to own a different experience starts with an awareness of how our underlying assumptions, mindsets, and vocabulary may be reinforcing a sense of reality that does not support how we wish to show up in the world and express ourselves.

Mental models, mental maps, and mental mirrors help us to expand the amount of constructs we have for predicting and filtering our internal and external experiences. When we have more constructs, we have more degrees of freedom and mental flexibility with which to exercise greater agency over our lives.

Default modes, whatever they are, are dangerous. What’s important is the recognition of our context to direct our behavior.

The best special operators, musicians, teachers, athletes, leaders, partners, and parents transcend default and are excellent because of a much more valuable asset than any one behavioral tendency. This is the asset of ADAPTABILITY.

♟️ High performance in an infinite game (a game with no finish line) is the result of ADAPTABILITY.

To me, the maxim “How you do anything is how you do everything” communicates the importance of cultivating a default mode, and I believe that the only default mode you should strive to cultivate is one in which there is no default mode.

Default modes, whatever they are, are dangerous. What’s important is the recognition of context to direct behavior. The best special operators, musicians, teachers, athletes, leaders, partners, and parents transcend default and are excellent because of a much more valuable asset than any one behavioral tendency. This is the asset of ADAPTABILITY.

🌊 Adaptability - physical, mental, and emotional is what we should all strive for. Adaptability is the prerequisite for compassion, maturity, diversity, overcoming adversity, and the evolution of physical capability, mental acuity, and emotional connection.

“How you do anything is how you do everything” implies a kind of binary–you are either amazing all the time, or you are not. This mindset is crippling and can create feelings of shame and insecurity that keep people from committing to an infinite process of practice with an openness to new experiences. Moreover, assertions that are binary do NOT hold up under fire, at least not repeated exposures of fire.

I recommend that you reject defaults and embrace adaptation based on situational awareness and intention.

Remember, you are more than just your past and your current personality profile. You are your identity, and you can define your identity based on your vision of the future, your malleable view of your past, your core personal philosophy (i.e., your WHY), and your values.

All these characteristics should influence how you do one thing in one context and that is it.

Self-Regulation is dependent on your capability to detach from certain focal points, mannerisms, and/or states of consciousness in order to direct your attention to different focal points, mannerisms, and/or states of consciousness that better support your situation, intended outcome, and the interplay between the two.
