No challenge, no change!
We have this mantra of no pain no gain and it has gotten us away from identifying where we are and what we need to do to go to the next level. We think, if I’m not in a lot of pain, I must not have worked out that hard. If I don’t do full pushups, it just means I’m not pushing myself enough. NOT TRUE!! We are much more likely to find lasting change if we accept where we are and identify what our next challenge is. That will also prevent injury and synergistic dominance, which is what happens when you aren’t activating your prime movers and your helper muscles take over leading to muscle imbalance and injury.
I started last March not being able to do more than 5 “real” pushups. It made me think, how can I be in the fitness possession and not be able to do pushups! Well first, that’s a load of crap, but I really wanted to get better. I started just trying to do regular pushups only, even if it was only one or two but I got frustrated. So I started to do different kind of pushups and shoulder stability exercises. I progressed through pushups on my knees, with my hands elevated, shoulder shrugs, banded pushups. I also did a lot of core stability and integration work. Today I am able to do 15 “real pushups” in a row.
What’s your challenge?
