Here we love breaking concepts down & simplifying them. Today’s topic: .
How do most of us use the term stress?
In today’s world we use the term “stress” or “stressed” often to refer to the feelings of overwhelm, like when our lives feel out of control. When we feel that our ability to respond to the triggers & demands of life is less than the speed & intensity at which they come at us.
In short, when we feel like our cup is full & we lack .
But perhaps if we define stress beyond just the mental/emotional version that we are all familiar with then we can understand it better & not see it as this monster that is always out there to get us.
So, what is stress?
Stress is a condition that introduces CHANGE into a system/organism. The change requires the system/organism to adapt, and when systems fail to adapt they will break down.
This “change” can be physiological, mental or emotional.
AND, GOOD or bad.
GOOD stress?!!!
Yes, good stressors are the ones that we “design” into our lives, they are SHORT & CONTROLLED.
Your body NEEDS this kind of stress. Examples are exercise, cold showers, fasting, new learning environments, etc.
We refer to this beneficial response to stress as hormesis (more to come).
Bad stress?
Oh, it too exists & we know it well…
The ones, those that linger for days, weeks, months & sometimes even years. The ones that seem to take our power away & occupy our minds & send us into a downward spiral in no time. Those that suck our energy & life-force out of us.
Some examples of unhealthy stressors are lack of (or poor quality) sleep, inflammatory diet, imbalanced hormones & blood sugar levels, disease process, sedentary lifestyle, constant use of stimulants to get through the day, smoking, excessive alcohol, lack of purpose in life, toxic relationships, & the list goes on…
Stay tuned for much MORE on stress, it’s impact on the body & more importantly on WAYS to cope in a healthy manner.
ALWAYS REMEMBER…
In most cases YOU DO have a CHOICE to make a POSITIVE CHANGE.
And…
HOW you INTERPRET the stresses (& stressors) in life are FAR MORE IMPORTANT than the stressors themselves!!! 👊🏽🙌🏽
