Raising children who offer green smoothies to their friends unprompted was not something I put on my vision board but here we are 🥬

In our house the normal has always been: green shots in the morning, fruit all day, plants at every meal, and the occasional chip (obviously).

I spent 8 days in Japan and came home wanting to completely rethink how I eat.

We brought Leo and Lily along — because that’s just how we do adventures — and I wasn’t expecting to come back with a notebook full of health lessons. But here we are.

Three things genuinely shifted something for me:

🍱 The food. Traditional Japanese meals aren’t one big thing — they’re ten small things. Miso, fermented veg, greens, sweet potato, rice. So much variety in a single sitting, and I never once felt heavy. We make things bigger. They make more things smaller. I’ve been rethinking how I plate our meals ever since.

🏙️ Tokyo. I was fully prepared not to love it. Big cities drain me. But it was calm. Quiet. Minimal. Clean streets, unhurried people, simple rooms. I kept thinking: our environment is always doing something to our nervous system — whether we notice it or not.

🍵 And then the tea. We stayed one night in a small tea town near Kyoto and I learned something that genuinely made me feel silly for not knowing sooner — matcha, green tea, black tea, hojicha — they all come from the same plant. Just processed differently. Steam the leaves and you stop oxidation (green tea). Let them dry and oxidize (black tea). Pulverize (matcha). Same plant. Completely different result. Different temperatures unlock different flavors — and honestly? That’s exactly how plants work in your body too.

(Leo had a few sips of green tea at the tasting. Did not stop talking for 45 minutes. His green tea access has been officially suspended. 😂)
