Willard has gotten a sauna installed in his place. This is a great healing tool to help him eliminate toxins, now that his exercise is more limited due to his ALS. His good friend and bandmate LouA has been a been a big help, getting projects done around the house. And of course , Willard’s dogs bring much happiness for all. It was spring training in 1939, and something was wrong. The mighty Iron Horse was losing his strength. Sportswriters noted he didn't hit a single home run in Florida, his baserunning was suffering, his coordination was noticeably off, and he had collapsed during a game at Al Lang Field.

Reporter James Kahn wrote, "I think there's something wrong with him… I have seen him time a ball perfectly, swing on it as hard as he can, meet it squarely - and drive a soft, looping fly over the infield."

By the end of April, his strength had gotten worse, and something was clearly wrong. Lou even missed a standard issue out at first base. Manager Joe McCarthy was under pressure to bench Lou.

Lou confirmed his performance was weighing on him too, explaining to reporters, "I haven't been a bit of good to the team since the season started."

Those who have witnessed a loved one's confounding decline leading up to an ALS diagnosis understand... we wish we could say it ain't so, but history would be made in just a few short weeks. The Iron Horse would be diagnosed with ALS later that spring.

The world lost Lou Gehrig on June 2, 1941. Lou was an amazing human being and one of the most beloved baseball champion the world has ever know. Loving Lou for all that he and his wife has done to fight ALS with their Lou Gehrig Foundation. Lou is still hitting it out of the ballpark for those who have ALS and their families.

Welcome to Heartbeats! Join us for a photographic, storied account of the legendary Lou Gehrig. Check out My Favorite Channels!- Shore Me Some Morehttps://ww...
