Medical social workers make a difference!

It inevitably stops social conversations. “I’m a medical social worker. I’m a counselor for individuals and families facing life-limiting and life-threatening illness.” The sad looks arrive. Eyebrows are raised. Pity faces stare at me. "Isn't it sad?

We had a great question tonight at our ethics presentation. What about social media presence and client disclosure?

Even if your private practice/community agency doesn't have an official google page or page you may end up with an unclaimed one (among other social media sites like Healthgrades.com) that can collect reviews. If someone reviews you they may disclose their full name and disclose that they were/are a client.

What do we do? We need to make sure our clients know their rights and responsibilities as a client and it is important to include this in our privacy policies and in our informed consent discussion. Educating our clients is VITAL.

Below is an example of a social media privacy policy that can be included in a privacy policy. Feel free to use this policy in your practice and if you work for an agency check with your QI/Risk management department to see if they have a social media policy in their privacy statement.

Make sure your clients get a copy and sign a form stating they have reviewed and received all your privacy policies.
