โOne of the toughest parts of my cancer journey was facing the depression I found that came along with the treatments I endured to help me survive cancer. I was grateful for my medical team for encouraging me to seek the support of a therapist who helped me talk through my feelings and get past my depression.โ
Meet Joe Bullock, a colorectal cancer survivor, COO of Man Up to Cancer, and Get Your Rear in Gear - Raleigh committee member!
โGet Your Rear in Gear means a lot to me because I know how important early detection and screenings are . . . I also appreciate the fact that the funds raised help those who may have barriers to getting that life-saving colonoscopy get one.โ
Joe was diagnosed in May 2018 with stage III colorectal cancer after a routine colonoscopy at age 50. โDuring the colonoscopy, my GI doctor found two polyps and a 10cm tumor . . . I had surgery to remove the tumor, the surgeon reconnected my colon, and I had 40 lymph nodes removed. Three of those tested positive for cancer. After surgery, I underwent treatment with two forms of chemo.โ
โAfter I finished chemo in February 2019 and found myself to have No Evidence of Disease, I made the decision that cancer might be done with me but Iโm not done with cancer. I wanted to focus on the lack of mental health support in the cancer community, but I realized I could not do this alone.โ
โToday Iโm the COO of an organization called Man Up to Cancer founded by Trevor Maxwell, a stage IV colorectal cancer thriver. Our foundation seeks to support men emotionally, no matter the type of cancer. We seek to change how they approach cancer through our multiple support programs.โ
