When a life-changing home renovation accident severed all of the major arteries in Petar Petrov’s arm, leading to an amputation, instead of letting it defeat him, he found new strength and purpose. 🦾

Although the entire process was extremely difficult, Petar realized that prior to his amputation, he wasn’t paying enough attention to the small things.

“I wanted to live. I started paying attention to the small things and learned to appreciate them. That helped me keep my mind strong,” said Petar.

Petar started seeing ICC clinician, Tim Russo, in 2021, who he says showed professionalism and genuine human compassion from the start.

“When we first met, he asked me what I wanted to use the prosthesis for. I told him, if possible, I wanted to become a truck driver again,” said Petar. “He already knew what needed to be done and his support and experience played an extremely important role in my adaptation process.”

With the help of his care team and his family support, Petar is back to doing the things he loves, and is enjoying his growing family, welcoming a second child during his recovery. He’s enjoyed returning to his old hobbies, including fishing, off-roading, and being out in nature, and even participated in the ICC center’s first upper-limb cooking class last May.

With a lot of dedication, Petar was able to achieve his huge goal of getting back to work as a truck driver! 🚛

Thank you for sharing your incredible story with us, Petar! We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.

After a leg lengthening surgery resulted in serious issues for Keith Philizaire, and he was unable to get a knee replacement, it was decided that an amputation was the best option to get him back to living a full life.

After the amputation in 2013, Keith spent almost nine years struggling to walk before meeting clinician Ryan Caldwell and beginning to receive care at Hanger Clinic. Ryan created a custom socket he designed called the NuFlex SIV socket, which helped Keith immensely.

He is now able to walk again and has gone back to working at the post office! Keith is grateful to have his mobility back as he raises his two daughters.

We can't wait to see all that you accomplish, Keith!

Born with phocomelia — a rare condition that left his right arm partially formed — Jeremiah is an incredible teenager who has navigated life on his own terms. But now, with a driver's license on the horizon and a growing desire for independence, he is ready for more! 🚀

Jeremiah and his Hanger Clinic clinician, Katie Spottiswood, CPO, MSOP, traveled from Indiana to Chicago to collaborate with Integrated Care Center clinician and upper limb specialist Tim Russo. Together, they faced a unique challenge: designing a device that not only gives Jeremiah a fully functioning arm but also protects his heart — since Jeremiah was also born without a sternum bone.

The result? A one-of-a-kind prosthesis, custom-built and collaboratively designed to keep him safe and doing the things he loves.
This is what's possible when clinicians, patients, and innovation come together in one place. We can't wait to see everything you do next, Jeremiah.

While dropping his daughter off at college in 2024, Rob Siebert was involved in an accident where he was pinned between two cars, changing his life forever.

Rob underwent several surgeries and ultimately ended up requiring the amputation of both legs above the knee, but he was grateful to be alive.

With over a year of both in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation, Rob is now re-learning to walk with the help of the ICC's Ryan Caldwell and his brand-new prostheses! He even attended our 2025 .

"I still have more work to do to navigating steps, curbs and declines. I also need to be able to get the wheelchair in/and out of the car on my own," said Siebert. "But I’m proud to say I’m back to work and living my new “normal” life as a bilateral, above knee amputee."

While currently working on core and strength training, as well as building stamina, Rob is excited to work towards trying adaptive options he used to enjoy such as jogging, ice hockey, golfing, sand volleyball, snow skiing, and wake-surfing!

Rob is fortunate to have an incredible support system which includes his wife, children, siblings, and friends. As well as the amazing community of neighbors and friends in Downers Grove who have supported him and his family from the beginning.

When asked if he had any words of wisdom for other amputees, Rob said "When you experience a traumatic loss like this, it is healthy to go through the gambit of emotions. It is also important to establish a mindset that I am going to be the best I can given my new body."

We are so grateful to be a part of your journey, Rob!

Happy birthday to patient Jessica Lazowski, who shared her incredible story of resilience with us!

When a train accident in 2006 caused the loss of her right leg below the knee, Jessica had a toddler and was just about to start grad school. Her initial goal was to be walking unassisted by the start of the semester, which she was amazingly able to accomplish. She has spent the last 20 years raising her family and living life to its fullest.

Jessica is excited to receive her care from Tom O’Doherty at the ICC.

“I think the facility is amazing. Just walking around and seeing all the things you can do is fantastic,” said Lazowski. “Given how welcoming it is, I think it would be easy for any amputee to come use the space.”

Jessica is surrounded by an incredible support system in her husband, children, and grandchild. Her newest goal is to improve her steps on inclines, and we have no doubt she will be able to accomplish it!

A zip-lining accident at a friend’s wedding in Mexico turned into a life-altering event resulting in nine surgeries and ultimately an above-knee amputation for Dr. Richard Tholen. Despite the challenges of being a new amputee, he was determined to return to his active lifestyle and career as a plastic surgeon, and just 91 days after his injury, he was back in the operating room!

“I was fortunate to receive high-quality prosthetic care and an above-knee prosthesis from the beginning of my journey, which enabled me to continue working and enjoying an active lifestyle.”

Initially receiving care in Minnesota, Dr. Tholen realized that he needed additional resources to ensure his device could meet his specific needs in the operating room. After connecting with Hanger’s Kevin Carroll, he was directed to the ICC’s very own Ryan Caldwell.

Dr. Tholen was immediately impressed by the Integrated Care Center’s innovative approach. “The facility offers a variety of real-world environments where amputees can test their prostheses,” said Tholen, “This setup allowed Ryan to make real-time adjustments to my prosthesis.”

Knowing Dr. Tholen’s passion for automobiles, Tony Kapechuk, a technician at the Integrated Care Center, sourced carbon fiber with a metallic red finish to match Dr. Tholen’s red car—an extra detail that made the prosthesis uniquely his.

Now, Dr. Tholen travels to the ICC for his care, and we couldn’t be happier to work with him and see his progress! Learn more about the ICC and Dr. Tholen at the link in our bio.

When building the ICC, our team strived to create a space for those of all abilities to try new things. One of our biggest requests was a climbing wall! 🧗‍♀️

With a big adaptive sports community in the Chicago area, and our very own Tom O'Doherty assisting in several adaptive climbing groups, we knew that a climbing wall was just what we needed.

Since our opening, many of our patients, whether they have climbed many times before or are brand new to it, have given the wall a try. 💪

During our Bilateral Above Knee Amputee (BAKA) Bootcamp that took place here last summer, many of the participants climbed for the very first time, which was a highlight of the event.

Curious about our facility and the resources we offer? Check out the link in our bio to learn more.

After her dreams of attending the Olympics for field hockey were dashed by a blown-out knee during her freshman year of college, Kay Levenson spent the next 35 years having more than 34 surgeries, to try and salvage her leg and to keep herself walking. When a knee replacement failed, she decided to amputate in 2019.

Despite all this, she has never let it slow her down. Kay has always been incredibly active, between sports, hiking, and three kids, she rarely slowed down.

Once she had her amputation, Kay struggled to get back to where she'd been, which is when she met Hanger Clinic's, Kevin Carroll, who introduced her to ICC Clinician Ryan Caldwell.

Despite living in Alaska, Kay traveled to Chicago to receive care from Ryan. She knew he was the right fit as soon as he asked her, "How can we make this happen for you?"

Now, Kay is back to traveling the world, even spending two-and-a-half months in the Galapagos this past spring.

"It doesn't matter that I don't have a leg, I am still very grounded on this earth, I have a great support system in Ryan's team, my family, and my PT, who all believe in me, which means I believe in me too."

We are so grateful that Kay is able to experience our facility and continue doing all the things she loves.
