The Grief I Didnât Expect as a Mother & SLP đđ
Iâll be honest: for a long time, I was the âlow-techâ mom. I wanted my son away from screens, focused on the âreal world.â
But then, I felt a specific kind of grief.
Iâd see other boys his age huddled together, laughing, shouting, and connecting over video games. My son was on the outside looking in. Not because he didnât want to join, but because those games required an executive function load he wasnât ready for. The focus, the rapid-fire learning curve, and the âentry feeâ of understanding the game mechanics felt like a wall he couldnât climb.
We didnât start with a controller. We started with the foundation.
At Copper Sky Academy we worked on card games and tabletop strategy. We built the âmusclesâ of turn-taking, shared attention, and strategy. Slowly, those skills became the bridge. He learned how to engage, how to be successful, and eventually, how to use gaming as a social currency.
The Truth About Tech & Neurodiversity:
While we often hear about the âdangersâ of too much technology, for our neurodivergent kids, it can actually be the key to the door. It provides:
â
A structured social script.
â
A shared interest that transcends small talk.
â
A âlevel playing fieldâ for connection and inclusion.
This is why Iâm so passionate about our new Copper Sky Social Clubs: Life Skills & Video Game Series. We arenât just âplaying games.â We are building the executive function and social-cognitive skills that allow our kids to walk into any room (or lobby) and feel like they belong. đŽđ¤
