Another common and dangerous cold-related emergency is Frostbite. Frostbite occurs when the skin and underlying tissue begin to freeze after exposure to continuous, extreme cold. Early signs of frostbite include: redness, pain, numbness, tingling, swelling and blisters. Basic first aid for Frostbite includes: removing wet clothing, separating fingers or toes with a clean dry pad, wrapping the affected part with something clean and dry, keeping affected part protected and calling for help.

One of the most common and dangerous cold-related emergencies is Hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when the body's core temp starts to fall below 95 degrees. Early signs of hypothermia include: Pale, Cold Skin; Uncontrollable Shivering & and Loss of Coordination. Basic first aid for Hypothermia includes: removing wet clothing, covering the person with something warm and dry, covering the head and neck to retain body heat and calling for help.

With the days growing colder, it is important to keep in mind the dangerous affects of winter weather. Here are a few tips to help keep you safer and warmer:

1. Avoid going outside if possible.
2. Dress in layers, paying special attention to hands, feet, head, face, ears and mouth.
3. Wear windproof and waterproof clothing.
4. Limit your time spent outside if you must leave indoors.
5. If you suspect a cold related emergency, move indoors or someplace warm and seek medical attention immediately.
