If you know me you know I love my morning coffee ☕️

I like it with almond milk creamer and nice and hot (fun fact: I’m not a cold coffee drinker)

But I have mad respect for it!

And I have boundaries around my coffee! Yes, everyone needs boundaries for something as tasty and addictive as caffeine. ✋🏼

In fact, coffee is the most widely consumed stimulant in the world for a reason!

It’s delicious and it WAKES TIRED PEOPLE UP! It’s also quite addictive.

How?

Caffeine blocks receptors in the brain that detect adenosine, which is a natural chemical that builds up during the day and makes you sleepy. It doesn’t take it away, just blocks it until it well, wears off and you crash.

Caffeine stays in your body for a LONG time! Six hrs after drinking a cup of coffee you still have 50% of it still in your system. This may cause sleep onset delays (can’t fall asleep at night or even if you can sleep it causes disrupted and light sleep in most people, even though you might not notice!). This makes you tired the next day and need more coffee..see the cycle?

This is where my boundaries come in:

👉🏼No coffee after 12 noon

👉🏼I limit it to one coffee in the morning and one tea (which still has caffeine but slightly less)

👉🏼 I don’t drink pop

If you need coffee to function, you should probably reach out to me 😊

I love coffee but respect the bean and it’s power 🙌🏼

Let’s hear it how many coffees do you indulge in per day (no judgement!) 👇🏼

And do you drink it for the love of coffee or for the need to function? 👇🏼

Am I right?! 😂 # momlife

Is your baby teething? 🦷

Is it affecting sleep? 💤

Teething is something that all babies go through until about the age of 2 years old. Some babies have an easier time with it than others. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Drooling does not always signal teething, an increase of drooling however can be common when your little one is teething.

Teething causes discomfort when the tooth is breaking through the gums as there are sensitive nerve endings as the tooth breaks through the skin’s surface. This is sometimes referred to as acute teething and lasts 1-2 days. After the tooth has come up the discomfort should go away all together. 🙌🏼

This 48 hour period is when you notice that your baby is fussy, rubbing their cheek or ear, low grade fever, increased drooling, loose stool (but not diarrhea), chewing on toys, their hands or anything they can get in their mouth and of course a harder time falling asleep if they are in pain.

The good thing is that this is short term and there are things that you can do to help! (1-3 days)

Stay tuned for more tips but tell me at what age did you notice teething the most? 👇🏼

I guess sleep deprivation helps create sleep appreciation but is not necessary! 😊

If we appreciate sleep and prioritize it, we can go straight to rested and skip the sleep deprived part.

If anyone tries to tell you it’s an expected or normal part of motherhood then tell them to go talk to the big guy👆🏼

We are NOT designed to withstand sleep deprivation..not even mothers. For a reason.

Nutrition & Sleep 💤

🍼main sources of nutrients and calories change as your baby gets older.
🍼iron, zinc and magnesium are important for sleep.
🍼Offer all kinds of foods with proteins and good fats.
🍼Baby’s are great little calorie counters.
🍼They will make up any calories they need.
🍼Reverse cycling is when a baby takes in most of their calories at night and less during the day. This can become a cycle.
🍼Sleep and feeding can be separate
🍼Both sleep and eating are needs that shouldn’t be forced.
🍼All we can do as parents is set them up for success and offer.

Every child is different so If you want to chat with me about your particular situation, type me in the comments and we’ll get you a free call👇🏼

Repost from .kids_intuitive.eating

Messages coming in hot from healthcare providers and parents who have had a peak at the new edition of Intuitive Eating. The chapter on feeding kids talks about baby led weaning (yay!) But to answer your questions.....

Responsive feeding and following your baby’s lead are key goals when it comes to introducing solid foods. 🤯

There is a myth floating around that tells parents they can only achieve these goals if they use baby led weaning.

Well. Guess what? You can reach this goal with traditional spoon feeding AND with baby led weaning.

You CAN raise an intuitive eater even if you don’t do baby led weaning. (And on the flip side I also see babies who are fed BLW style but with loads of pressure tactics, which does not lead to intuitive eating.)

This might be an unpopular opinion in some circles but I see it over and over again...many babies do best when they receive some spoon feeding and are also provided with regular opportunities to self-feed.

The key is BEING RESPONSIVE TO YOUR BABY’s CUES. This is how you raise an intuitive eater.

If you are confused about how to feed your baby...well that is what I help parents with every day.

Got questions? Send me a DM. I’d love to find out how you introduced solids or how you plan on introducing solids.
