Self Care Saturday!

•Take a walk - put baby in the carrier or the stroller and get out for a short walk today. It’s supposed to be a beautiful day in Seattle! It’s going to be cold though so make sure you and baby bundle up.
•Positive Self Talk - you’re doing amazing, remind yourself.
•Reflect on being a new parent - journal or talk with your partner about how this new chapter has effected you.
•Call your best friend - just to talk. When’s the last time you did that? Set aside some time today for a quick phone call.
•Take a nap - easier said than done I know, but if you can get a nap in today you’ll thank yourself for it later.
•Get crafty - something as simple as throwing paint on a canvas or doodling works for me, but find something that works for you!

And finally

✨Ask for help, or space - As new parents you often feel like you’re alone in this and you must handle everything alone. This is not true at all reach out to your parents, your friends, a postpartum doula or a nanny. This can take some pressure off of you and allow you to care for yourself. On the contrary if family and friends are constantly stopping by and it’s overwhelming, ask them for a break and explain you just want to enjoy your space and your family for a couple days.

If you are expecting a new addition to the family soon, please do yourself a favor and put this item in your baby shower registry! It is a miracle worker and your ni***es will thank you!

Chapped and cracked ni***es are a common issue when you are breastfeeding or pumping. There are a few things you can do to prevent it and also treat it once it happens. This super star does both.

The star of the show in the product is it’s sterilized medical grade, Manuka Honey. Because of the sterilization this is completely safe for your baby and does not need to be wiped off of the ni**le prior to chest feeding.

If your local in the PNW, there are a few places you can buy this in store and please feel free to reach out if you’d like to know where. This is not an ad I just really believe and stand behind this product.

I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face and I sound like a broken record, but just because it works for your friend, does not mean it will work for you. Your friends life is not your life, what is a must have product for them may not be for you.

What was the one product everyone told you you needed but you never used it? Or vice versa, what did someone tell you you’d never use and you ended up loving?

Day 2 of our Baby Wearing series!

Today we look at Soft Structured Carrier (SSC) aka Buckle Carrier. This can be a great option if you have multiple caregivers in the home. While these carriers can be pricey, they tend to last longer and are able to be utilized longer than other carriers.

“What breast pump is right for me?”

This is a complicated question but there’s ways we can find the answer. What those ways are not is “well my friend has this one” or “my mom used this brand and says it’s the best.” Etc.

Having the right breast pump for you is most likely going to play a big part in your feeding journey if you plan to feed from the chest. So here’s a few questions to ask yourself and the same questions I’d go over with you as your doula

• What does life look like after baby comes? Are you going back to work? Are you going to be a SAHM?

• Have you pumped before? Was that a successful and pleasant experience for you?

• Do you need something portable or are you okay with having to be plugged into the wall?

Depending on the answers to these questions we can usually always find a pump that’s going to work for you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options out there right now I know great local resources and am happy to help in anyway I can.

I heard this quote for the first time on Monday during a trauma informed care training, and when I tell you it spoke to me louder than anything has lately. So many of us have gone through life not feeling nurtured, whether it was something we never got at home or something we never have received during medical care. I believe humans thrive when they are nurtured, not only that, but the nurtured go on to nurture. Crescent Birth Services is determined to make you feel nurtured throughout the perinatal period, so you can go on to nurture your growing child.

Currently I have availability for both birth and post party support starting in mid June and booking anytime for the rest of 2021. Please reach out if you have any questions for me.

Placentas! They don’t get the credit they deserve. The placenta is an organ that develops during pregnancy. It attaches to the lining of the uterus and transfers oxygen, nutrients and glucose to baby via the umbilical cord. The placenta also filters out the bad things that could be harmful to your baby.

After giving birth you will then have to give birth to the placenta, this is usually done with one more push after bringing your baby earth side if you have given birth vaginally. If you give birth via cesarean then the placenta will be removed from the womb at the same time.

I could truly talk placentas for hours, so if you have any questions feel free to message me.

*Crescent Birth Services is not currently offering encapsulation services, we will be offering this in early 2022 so keep an eye out for that announcement. In the meantime we are happy to offer referrals to encapsulators in the area.

Happy Monday Lovelies! Here is your reminder that your pregnancy will not look the same as your mom’s, your friend’s, your sister’s or anyone else’s. It will be your own sacred experience that will be completely your own. You’re birthing experience is the same, we all come from different experiences and different biases. No one has lived the same life as you and this part of your journey is no different. The difference is you will have many very well intentioned people trying to give you advice, and warnings, and sharing their own experiences. Not realizing how those can effect you on your journey.

So take a moment next time you catch yourself comparing your journey to someone else’s, and remind yourself that every journey is unique and every journey has the potential to be beautiful and magical.

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend, I have quite a few new followers on this page and figured it was about time I introduced myself to those who may not know me.

I’m Nicole, I have lived in and around the Seattle/Tacoma area my whole life and I love it here. Most days I’m spending my time walking my dog, cooking or studying. On the weekends I’m not on call I like to get away from the city. Lake Crescent is where my heart lives, it is my happy place. Fun fact: Its also where Crescent Birth Services got its name. Lake Crescent has a way of instantly relaxing me and opening my eyes to the bigger picture. My goal is help you create a birthing experience that feels just as magical for you.

I got into birth work without realizing I was in birth work, I had a friend who was young and put on bed rest at a very young age while pregnant with her oldest daughter. I was at her house several times to help her in anyway I could, I just wanted to make it as easy as possible for her. She eventually gave birth to a beautiful healthy girl, who came just in time for me to meet her at the hospital. It was that morning in the hospital, I knew this was the path I wanted to take.

My experience includes work as a CNA, a part time nanny, and a toddler teacher at an early learning center. I have experience with toddler twins, and caring for children with different abilities. I have gone through doula training and multiple trainings regarding trauma informed care during the perinatal period.

I’m a new full spectrum doula who is currently booking clients with June 2021 EDD or later. I also offer lactation support and education. Hopefully that helps answer some questions you may have had, but please feel free to reach out if there is something I didn’t cover.

“Together we can create a kinder, more inclusive world”

We all want a more inclusive world, where everyone can reach their full potential. This includes those on the Autism Spectrum. Wear blue today to bring awareness, donate, and speak up when something is wrong.

Currently Autism effects 1 in every 54 children. We owe them the same opportunities everyone else gets.

April is International Cesarean Awareness month this an event put on by the International Cesarean Awareness Network, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by reducing preventable cesareans through education, supporting cesarean recovery, and advocating for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC).

Along with our Birth Affirmation series on this page we will also be highlighting VBAC facts, myths and common questions.

I also wanted to note some of the most amazing parents I know, birthed their children via cesarean section. Cesarean birth is birth. It’s a life saving procedure that we are lucky to have as an option. Crescent Birth Services is prepared to support you in any birth scenario, if you’re unsure please reach out to me.

Caffeine during pregnancy, there’s a lot of misinformation out there. The ACOG recommends pregnant individuals consume no more than 200mg of caffeine per day.

That’s:

•One 1/2 cups of brewed coffee (check caffeine content, can widely vary)

•Two shots of espresso

•Two to Three cups of instant coffee

Always consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns.

Stay positive! Crescent Birth Services believes in the power of positive thinking! I know you can do this and I know deep down you know you can do this! Pregnancy isn’t always easy and we know labor can be difficult at times but relaxing, intentional breathing, and being kind to yourself can all help labor progress naturally.

We know it can be hard to remember to check in with yourself while in the midst of it all, that’s one of the many benefits of having a doula by your side to support you. To bring you back to your breathing, to hold your hand, to remind you what an amazing person you are and how powerful you are in that moment. If you think you’d benefit from additional support during labor feel free to message me or reach out on via my website. I’m happy to schedule a free zoom consultation or a social distanced masked consultation whichever works best for your family.

Dilation vs effacement? What’s the difference?

Dilation: This refers to the cervix opening. This is measured in centimeters and once your cervix dilated to 10cm you are dilated enough to birth your baby.

Effacement: This refers to the thinning and stretching of the cervix. This is measured in percentages. When you’re 100% effaced your cervix has thinned and stretched enough to birth your baby.

What to be prepared for: In the ninth month of pregnancy your provider will start checking for signs that labor is getting close. Based on what your provider sees, they may make an estimate on when you will deliver based on if your baby has “dropped”, as well as if the the cervix has dilated or effaced yet and if so, by how much.

If you have any questions regarding this process or what to expect at your next appointment with your provider, please feel free to reach out for a free consultation!
