MPJ Back Injury Part 2…. Listen to his wise words and experience!!

DM me for rehab coaching 💯

🏀You can return successfully from disc injuries with or without surgery.

When the health of the nerve is severely threatened, this warrants surgery.

In other cases, the decision is more gray.

There are many athletes who have disc injuries and they are asymptomatic.

There are many athletes who return to full function with disc injuries treated conservatively.

In the professional sports world, most of the time you get surgery… This is because we like to fast-track healing AND treat symptoms 👎🏽.

With or without surgery, you can successfully come back and compete at a high level in most cases.

In ALL cases with disc injuries, you shouldn’t rush the process to return to sport. Your disc needs time to heal appropriately and if you rush yourself back, this puts you at risk for repeat injuries or additional surgeries.

This happened in the Michael Porter Jr. case and if I’m being honest, his injury was mismanaged at MIZZOU.

He continued to have adjustments by different chiros and therapists. You should not be seeking care from anybody and everybody. You need to build rapport with select specialists, consistently because this way they are able to learn your body.

It was reported a therapist made his injury worse at MIZZOU which led to his first surgery. This may have not been the therapist’s fault, MPJ could have had so many different adjustments that the therapist happened to be the unlucky one to cause the injury.

At MIZZOU they should have never let him return at 50% after the surgery! Not even able to really elevate on the left leg. That’s BS 😤

But I understand it was all about making it to the league….

Glad Markelle Fultz was able to rehab through this injury successfully. Coming off of his ACL rehab I think he will be effective next year on the court. He was impactful playing with one arm and not being able to really shoot out there. Good player for sure.

🏆 DM to train directly with me virtually. I will analyze your impairments and asymmetries and help you develop basketball elite strength for performance and longevity.

🏀Returning to sport early after surgery or injury….

Playing through injury….

We hear of cases like Ron Artest having a meniscectomy and returning to play pick up ball in 2 days. Every response to surgery and injury is individualistic.

Many bounce back from meniscus trims quickly but in the long-run have arthritic knees. Some cases this might be worth it, like obtaining a championship.

Other times, the reward may not be worth the risk. Many factors go into this… Stage of career, type of injury, injury history, contract, championship run, etc.

We see guys like Adrian Peterson tear an ACL like 5 different times and still return to play in 6 months at a high level. Again, highly individualistic.

This is not normal.

The media celebrates guys being “tough” and playing through injury.

Sometimes there ARE injuries you should be tough about and play through.

Actually, every hooper in the post-season is tough and playing through injuries. No one is 100%.

BUT, some injuries don’t show you are tough when you play through them, they show more stupid.

Weigh the risk and reward proper 💯

No pain no gain approach is backwards. We don’t have to view our training as suffering. Yes, it’s extremely difficult at times, but what is our perspective on this? Powerful or forceful?

🏀Common rehab issues with ACL tears include overcompensation.

Fix this with correct ROM, motor control and coordination, and balanced posterior chain activation!

Bone Spurs are your body’s attempt to try to gain stability in hypermobile joints. Regain mobility before pounding on your joints to prevent this.

Don’t skip steps before moving on to more advanced stages in rehab!! Coming back too soon isn’t cool if it leads to more issues down the road.

Pain is very complex…

I believe we over-utilize surgery in the sports medicine world.

In Ben Simmons case, he has a chronic back injury that did not
occur from playing basketball.

Rarely do these cases require surgery.

Most surgical cases for disc injuries come from acute injuries that threaten the integrity of a nerve involved.

The nerve is basically starved of oxygen and if this occurs for prolonged periods of time, it can permanently damage the nerve.

I don’t think this was the case with Ben Simmons.

I’m tired of over treating our athletes with invasive procedures.

Many athletes will recover well from microdiscectomy (Dwight Howard), while many others will require additional surgeries and have continued back pain in their careers.

In this Ben Simmons case, we know his psychological issues are a big part of his experienced pain because he was ramping up well until the night BEFORE the game.

In most chronic cases the tissue has already healed but the body is still on high alert physically and emotionally.

Surgery likely won’t fix this, but hopefully it does in this case…

I also wish I could see a video of his low back rehab because the static stabilization is a joke for disc health 😂

Discs need compression, decompression, and glide!!!
