Ready to learn Tarot with Bijou Fortune? We are creating our own Tarot deck and will be showcasing it here, along with explanations of each card.
The first card of the Major Arcana is the Fool.
Technically, though, it isn't the first card--it's card number zero. The Fool is the essence of beginnings; it's that first spark of curiosity that sets us on a new journey. It is the Holy Fool--the archetype of one who is so innocent and unashamed of their desire to learn God's honest truth that others doubt their intelligence by conventional standards.
The Fool is not lacking in intelligence--in fact, as the one Major Arcana outside of the Roman numbering of the others, it can represent thinking outside the box and subverting the rules in very smart ways. What the Fool lacks is a sense of pride or shame. That will come later, when the journey is underway, but anyone who starts something new must understand that it will require a time of being a fool.
This doesn't mean we should be Fools forever. One who lingers in this phase, unwilling to learn or change, is viewed unfavorably. Like all cards, the Fool can speak of good things and bad.
I placed a rabbit on this card because of this animal's combined association with foolish fluffy-headedness, innocence, and prolific procreation (new beginnings in a literal sense). Here it hops across a bright sunrise sky, overlaid with the greenery of new growth. It is not following the map laid across the image, which is just as well, because it's a map of a town lost to the sea hundreds of years ago. Instead it seeks the magical fairy door below, which will lead to new adventure for sure.
READINGS OF THE FOOL: new beginnings, setting off on a (spiritual or literal) journey, open minds, curiosity, innocence, being outside of the system.
READINGS OF THE FOOL REVERSED: a need to learn from the past, difficulty growing and changing, a situation that is familiar from past experience. Occasionally it just means "you idiot!" if the cards are being blunt enough.
