Yoga with a view today.
A view of autonomy for women and access to safe healthcare.

All of the money paid towards my yoga programming this month (May) gets donated to Planned Parenthood in an effort to help prevent the overturn of Roe v Wade.

That means you get yoga AND take action to make the world a safer, inclusive place for all.

On the fence? There’s options as small as just a one class pass donation ($15).

Thinking big? Go for an annual membership ($400).

All options on my website under CALL TO ACTION.

Thank you for being here, in the world. ♥️ I appreciate you all.

Do you listen to your body and do your own thing in a yoga class or do you push through and try to “look” like everyone else??

**my biggest pet peeve as an instructor is when people are trying to look pretty and pushing their body too far***

Want reminders to listen to your body? Learn how to identify that feedback? You might want to try out my classes. Classes on my website.♥️

I skipped my yoga class for this.

Just here to say that even though yoga is a huge part of my life and so important to my health, sometimes cuddling in the sun under palm trees with my sister takes priority.

What have you skipped yoga for?
(Tell me below!)

Want to get back into it? I teach that! Click the link in my bio😉

What if you could jump forward to warmer days now?
Here in Seattle looking outside, Spring, warmth and sunshine have arrived. But venturing out the crisp cold air, the sensation of freezing still rushes straight through to my bones. 🥶
As someone who is almost always cold want to know my secret for warmth?
Getting on my yoga mat.
(Big surprise.)
Within minutes of movement things start to heat up and I feel invigorated. 🔥
Want to light things up in your world? Join me on your mat. I’ve got virtual on-demand programs suited exactly to you ♥️

Sunlit inspired flow.

Sometimes stepping on my mat is easy. I’m like a cat in a patch of sunshine on days like today. Other days it’s the routine that puts me there (because my mind would rather be anywhere else.)

The one thing that is consistent is how I feel afterwards. (Spoiler alert: it’s astounding.)

Find your balance. Then hang on tight.

When learning balance poses we talk a lot about grounding down. Building up your foundation and imagining as though you are growing roots. The more I think about the more it’s just practical life advice really.

Find something that grounds you. Build a strong foundation from which to grow. And develop roots in that exact place.

Quietening the mind is a challenge.
The first step is to catch when your mind wanders and bring it back (gently, like a small child.)
Yoga asana (poses) were developed to work out the body, so sitting and getting still were more accessible.
Get the wiggles out, then practice getting quiet in the mind.
The more you do it the easier it gets.
Like exercising any other muscle. Only this happens to be your brain, and you’re building neuropathways. (Think trailblazing shortcuts to calm.)

The more you do it, the better you get.
Getting quiet in the mind doesn’t have to mean silence, guided meditations and mindfulness meditation help just as much.

Want to try it out?
Check out my IG bio for your free class.
Each of my yoga classes includes svanasana at the end. (It’s the part where you’ve worked the body and can relax. Easing the mind into stillness as well.)
Give yourself the break you truly deserve.

How many times do you bend over to pick something up in a day?
Can you do up your shoes without sitting down?
Touch your toes?
These are all body tasks that get harder as we age, or have injuries. And once you stop doing them your ability and mobility to do them decreases.
Stop avoiding and start practicing.

Doesn’t even have to be yoga (but if you wanna start there check out the link in bio for some awesome classes).

Now drop it like it’s hot…and pick it up again.

How yogis read.

If you have to be sitting doing something why not make it interesting?

Lotus as shown here is NOT for everyone. But how about just sitting on the floor cross legged? Or sitting on the floor in any position really. Give your hips some love and move them different directions (aka get outta that chair and try something new.)

Now back to my book…

This isn’t a jazzercise class. (Is that even a thing anymore or did it die in the 90s?)

Yoga brings breath and movement together to create mindfulness in the body. It allows for nervous system regulation and is what has been proven to have wide ranging beneficial psychological and physiological effects. (Decreased stress, better mobility, decreased pain.)

If you can’t regulate your breath then slow your yoga practice down so the two can be in sync. It’s here in this magic space that you get the benefits.

Not sure where to start? I’ve got a free class in my bio and a bunch on my website you can rent or subscribe to. Most practices are gentle and slower so your breath can join in, and you can reap the benefits.

But why is it so hard to get started? To find motivation?

Motivation is something that builds. You need to work up the neural network in your brain to crave something - to feel motivated to do it. How do we create this?

Three steps:

1. START
Build it into your routine. Our brain anticipates things i.e. wake up, then shower, then drink coffee. We like to automate what we do (less thinking involved). Schedule it, then DO IT.

2. CUE
How do you automate? You re-create the same sequence of events on repeat. This cues your brain into what comes next. For example a daily routine: roll out of bed, then yoga, then shower. Find what works for you. For me it’s after breakfast and kid drop off. That’s my CUE to do yoga.

3. CRAVE
But how do you force yourself to like it? To want it? To crave it? Give yourself a reward. (Something that makes you immediately happy - this floods your brain with dopamine and gives you a good feeling.) For many of us that’s checking it off our to do list (sense of accomplishment) for others maybe it’s giving yourself something small (a cup of tea, 5 minutes to yourself, a piece of dark chocolate) and for others it might be something else - the trick is that it feels good to you. Find it and give yourself that after you have completed your practice. Establish your ability to CRAVE it.

Now go do the yoga! Want a class - I got you - head to my profile for a free one, or search my website for my on-demand library with classes to rent.

Your body will thank you.
