Dad’s Gut Bacteria Affects Child’s Health

A new study revealed a direct link between the gut microbiota of fathers and the health of their offspring.

The research shows that changes in the gut microbiota of male mice—caused by antibiotic treatment—can result in their offspring being born underweight and with a higher likelihood of early mortality.

This phenomenon, termed the 'gut-germline axis', suggests that disruptions in the gut microbiota affect the reproductive system and significantly influence the next generation.

The study also provides encouraging results that the negative impacts on offspring can be reversed by restoring the father's microbiota to a healthy state before mating.

The kids are not all right, and frustratingly, we don’t really know how to help them.
