Stress often shows up in the body before it even reaches your mind. Tight shoulders, clenched jaws, restless legs—it’s your body’s way of holding on
tension. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is a simple yet powerful technique
that helps release that tension, one muscle group at a time.
The beauty of PMR is that it doesn’t require anything but your attention. You can do it lying down, sitting in a chair, or even during a quick break in your day.
Here’s how:
1. Find a Comfortable Position
Close your eyes if it feels right, and take a few slow, deep breaths. Let your
shoulders drop, and your body settle.
2. Start with Your Feet
Focus on your toes. Curl them tightly, holding for 5 seconds, then slowly release.
Notice the sensation of tension leaving your muscles.
3. Move Up Your Body
Work your way through each muscle group. Tense your calves, then release.
Squeeze your thighs, hold, then let go. Continue with your abdomen, hands, arms,shoulders, and neck.
4. End with Your Face Raise your eyebrows, clench your jaw, or scrunch your nose—whatever feels natural. Hold for a moment, then release everything, letting your face soften completely.
5. Reflect on the Difference

Once you’ve moved through your entire body, take a moment to notice how it
feels compared to when you started. Often, the act of releasing tension creates a sense of calm that lingers.
PMR teaches you to notice tension as it builds, giving you the tools to let it go
before it takes hold. With practice, it becomes a gentle reset button for your body and mind anytime you need it.

Some days, the tension creeps in before you even realize it—tight temples, that dull ache behind your eyes, the kind of headache that begs you to pause. This happened to me yesterday. Here’s a gentle, natural trick that can offer relief: peppermint essential oil.
The cooling sensation of peppermint oil, when applied to your temples or the back of your neck, can help ease headaches and tension. Rub a small drop between your fingers, then gently massage it into your skin. The soothing aroma and the cooling effect work together to calm
your senses and help you feel more grounded.
It’s one of those simple, intentional moments of self-care that doesn’t take much time but can make a real difference. Keep a small bottle of peppermint oil in your bag, on your desk, or by your bedside for those moments when life feels just a little too heavy.
