‘A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount “up to, and including my life.”’

Once just a day off from work, Veteran’s Day has taken on a much deeper meaning for me since 2000.

It had to be fate, because there is no other explanation for how I met Gabe that night, and little did I know what life had in store for the two of us.

So each Veteran’s Day I get to reminisce about a fateful meeting that changed the course of my life, to recognize the service of my favorite veteran, and all others who’ve chosen to serve and write that blank check.

Happy ‘first meeting’ day 25 years ago, Gabe, and I love you, and I’m forever so proud of your 22 years of selfless service, all you’ve accomplished, and all you continue to do for your country and fellow veterans.

You just never know what other people might be going through or struggling with in the inside.

Err on the side of kindness.

And please reach out if you’re the one struggling and hurting 💜

PS—I’m okay; I just know others who are hurting 💜
