You made it!

If you feel different from who you were eight Runes ago, that’s because you are.

If you’ve followed my posts since March of 2026, you are now familiar with Runes 9 through 16 of the Elder Futhark. As a group these are called ‘Heimdall’s Aett’ – the second of three Elder Futhark families of Runes (‘Aett’ in Old Norse means family).

While the first set of 8 (Freya’s Aett: Fehu through Wunjo) gave us the tools for survival, this 2nd set gave us the grit to use those tools in the real world. ‘Heimdall’s Aett’ – named for the Norse god of perception, guardianship, and foresight – started in the eye of the storm and ended in the warmth of a hard-won victory.

Comprised of Runes Hagalaz through Sowilo, Heimdall’s Aett takes us on a tour through the great trials and unavoidable experiences of life, and shows us that through facing these difficulties, we evolve.

These Runes forge our character through exposing us to the meaning of existence.

Let’s look at the road we’ve traveled together so far:

• Hagalaz: You learned that disruption isn't a defeat, but a clearing. You embraced the chaos to find out what remains intact.
• Naudhiz: By turning resistance and friction into fuel, you stopped asking "Why me?" and started saying "What’s next?"
• Isa: You found strength in the ‘Power of Pause’ learning that stillness is part of your biological infrastructure.
• Jera: You traded in your attachment to ‘Hustle Culture’ and began to trust the rhythm and flow of natural cycles.
• Eihwaz: You sunk your roots into your greatest aspirations, becoming the ‘Evergreen’ that stands strong, in all seasons.
• Perthro: You mastered the ‘Sacred Geometry of Chance’ and found that calculated risk is a gateway to growth.
• Elhaz: You sharpened your senses and built your boundaries, moving from ‘Numb’ to ‘Actively Aware’.
• Sowilo: You ignited your inner reserves and became a conduit of ‘Life Energy’, stepping into your own authority.

The Runes of Heimdall’s Aett are transformational. They deal with themes of disruption, change, impermanence, and even unexpected luck. Through introspection and endurance, you’ve become better at navigating your own life’s course.

Runic Practice:

Take a few minutes today to look back at your notes or my previous 8 posts.

1. Review Your Path: List ways that you’ve recently experienced disruption (Hagalaz), dealt with resistance or distress (Naudhiz), felt stalled or restricted (Isa), witnessed cycles (Jera), took steps to be more grounded and hardier (Eihwaz), taken a chance (Perthro), protected your boundaries (Elhaz), or connected to the energy of life (Sowilo).

2. Measure Your Growth: Think about how you’ve grown from having all these experiences. What was your biggest ‘Win’? It could be a project finished, a boundary set, a habit swapped, etc.

3. Name Your Power: Say, “I have traveled through the tempest to reach the calm. Now, like the Sun, I am the ‘Radiant Authority’ of my own Journey.”
By naming the ‘Win’ you are telling your brain's Limbic System that the struggle was worth it, which flushes out corrosive cortisol and replaces it with ‘Sowilo Serotonin’.

Next week we’ll continue our journey through the final group of 8 Runes – Tyr’s Aett, starting with Tiwaz. On this stretch we’ll move from surviving the Testing Grounds and enter the realm of Spirit, Law, and Legacy.

What makes you feel safe?

The nightmare of world news, anxiety from work, family stress, responsibilities, social pressures - can all seem overwhelming and inescapable to even the strongest among us.

Being tested each day by such dissonance and with so many demands on our attention it’s no wonder we become over-stimulated, preoccupied, and numb to the reality of our present environment.

High Alert Tip: This is the sort of condition that makes us vulnerable to danger and requires top-of-mind urgency and awareness.

To create a buffer zone - a safe sanctuary - you must quiet the disorder and flip your focus to the here and now by tuning in to the natural noise-free frequency of the 15th Rune of the Elder Futhark:

Elhaz – Rune of Protection, Awareness, and Sacred Space

The main theme of Elhaz is protection – through the provision of a place, or condition of safety. To be successful in shielding yourself from harm, begin by paying attention to your immediate surroundings and whatever ‘situation’ you may find yourself in.

Equally important is the energy you project! When you radiate confidence, alertness, and a strong sense of self - complete with well-defined boundaries - it will be easier to disable those who try to manipulate or deceive you.

Traditionally, the shape of Elhaz represents the defensive antlers of the elk, or an outstretched hand fending off interference.

The forks of Elhaz also call to mind the branched shape of neural dendrites which convey electrical impulses between neurons, ultimately transmitting information throughout your brain, nervous system and body. In this way, Elhaz is symbolic of your senses, and therefore, your awareness. Concentrating on the imagery of Elhaz brings your mind into alignment with your body, allowing information and sensations to flow through you.

Runic Practice:

To align with the Rune of Protection and Sacred Space, try these daily Shielding Skills:

• The Sensor Visualization: Stand or sit tall, reaching your arms up and out in the shape of the Elhaz Rune. Imagine your fingers are highly sensitive, biological ‘sensors’ scanning the environment. Feel your ‘detectors’ catching subtle shifts in the room. This moves your conscious mind out of preoccupied numbness and into the here and now.

• The Neural System Check: Since Elhaz represents the communication between your brain and body, use this countdown to quiet feelings of disorder: Acknowledge 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. By doing this, you are literally firing up your neural network to transmit ‘presence’, making you less vulnerable to distraction.

• The Digital Deflector: Whenever you are needing to stay focused, and a notification pings or a ‘distraction demand’ hits, physically hold up one hand in the outstretched (Stop!) position of Elhaz. Say (silently or aloud) "Buffer engaged." This creates a physical anchor for your boundary, disabling the News/Hustle interference before it reaches your mental sanctuary. Better yet, turn off all notifications that are not related to your immediate health, safety and security. (The food photo your best friend just posted online is ‘not’ something you need to be ‘notified’ about in the midst of your busy day.)

Destiny is calling your name. How will you answer?

The future is always uncertain – there are no guarantees – and yet that vast unknown is fertile with possibilities for anyone willing to trust themselves.

If we accept that life is a game – perhaps even a lively game of fortune – then being playful and seeking joy is part of the gamble. And when you take a chance, either you win, or you gain a lesson.

Calculated risk is a gateway to growth. Safe paths may feel secure, but they lead to stagnation. So why not explore the shadows, ask the uncomfortable questions, and master your fear of uncertainty?

See your current choice as the tapestry needle weaving these threads into a new pattern. This shifts you from the vagueness of ‘Feeling Lucky’ to the authority of ‘Being the Weaver.’

• The Calculated Risk: Once a day, take a Micro-Gamble. For example, order a menu item you’ve never had or can't pronounce, take a different turn on your usual walk, or speak up first in a meeting. Your attitude is that you’re not looking for the ‘win’ but the ‘lesson’. This builds up your ‘Perthro Muscles’ so that when the stakes are high, you’re already comfortable with the unknown.

• The Synchronicity Walk: Take a 10-minute walk with the sole intent of finding a ‘Code.’ Look for recurring numbers, colors, or symbols in your environment. Life is hard. Yet sometimes we choose the difficult road.

Can struggle make us stronger? Of course. Many traditions embrace customs that include rites of passage, vision quests, pilgrimages, or other kinds of arduous physical trials or inner odysseys taken in order to reach spiritual breakthroughs.

This voluntary grappling with hardship is meant to connect us to the wisdom of the Cosmos and to remind us that we are truly on a ‘hunt for our souls’.

The prize we pursue requires us to open a communication channel between worlds, to connect to the guidance of our higher selves.

The strength of that signal increases when you plug in to the 13th Rune of the Elder Futhark:

Eihwaz – Rune of The Shamanic Journey, Memory, and Eternity

Eihwaz is represented in Norse myth by both the World-Tree Yggdrasil, whose structure forms the central support system connecting all realms of existence, and of Odin’s horse Sleipnir, who was capable of traversing those realms.

Yggdrasil is represented as a Yew – an incredibly long-lived tree, sacred in many cultures. Even in the dead of winter, when all else seems lifeless, the Yew stands strong & green – a promise that life perseveres even under the harshest conditions.

As we follow along the roots, trunk, and branches of this mythical conduit (with Eihwaz as our guide) we connect to the worlds of the sacred, the ordinary, and the everlasting. And while this Rune may test and challenge you to define your relationship with life, death, and eternity – it also puts you in touch with your higher self, your ancestral teachers, and your own evergreen resilience.

When you realize that you are not the same person you were ten years ago, or ten months, or even ten days in the past – you understand that change is inevitable, constant, good, and yes, necessary. All growth involves adaptation and change.

So, when your life hits a snag, remember that inconvenience is not an obstacle but a teacher forcing us to slow down and pay attention. Eihwaz kindles the fire within us. Once ignited through discipline – it fuels our ever-evolving journey forward.

Runic Practice:

To align with the Rune of Memory and the Shamanic Journey, try these Soul-Seeking routines:

• The World Tree Visualization: Sit or stand tall. Imagine your spine is the trunk of the Yew tree, Yggdrasil. Visualize your roots extending deep into the Memory of the earth and the crown of your head reaching up into the Eternity of the stars. See yourself tall and strong. Breathe into your verticality and remind yourself: "I am the axis of the world. Storms may move around me, but my structure holds".

• The Daily Hardship Mini-Rite: Eihwaz is about the difficult road making us stronger. Once a day, purposefully choose a small physical or mental challenge, e.g. – take the stairs instead of the elevator, or finish your shower with 30 seconds of cold water. Through this Mini Rite of Passage, you are proving to your higher self that you are capable of discipline, further kindling your inner fire.

• The Time-Travel Hook: Use the Eihwaz ‘double-hooked’ shape to reclaim a lost trait. Think of a version of yourself from ten or more years ago - maybe a version that was more adventurous, or more artistic. Find a physical object (a photo, a ticket stub, an old book) that represents that version of you. Keep it where you’ll see it (like on your desk or dashboard) for 13 days. Let Eihwaz ‘hook’ that old strength and pull it into your current identity.

According to Norse myth, Runes originally came to humankind from Odin himself as a set of holy mysteries and secret wisdom.
