Remember

by Joy Harjo

Remember the sky that you were born under,
know each of the star’s stories.
Remember the moon, know who she is.
Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the
strongest point of time. Remember sundown
and the giving away to night.
Remember your birth, how your mother struggled
to give you form and breath. You are evidence of
her life, and her mother’s, and hers.
Remember your father. He is your life, also.
Remember the earth whose skin you are:
red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth
brown earth, we are earth.
Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their
tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,
listen to them. They are alive poems.
Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the
origin of this universe.
Remember you are all people and all people
are you.
Remember you are this universe and this
universe is you.
Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.
Remember language comes from this.
Remember the dance language is, that life is.
Remember.

Today is Sraddha’s birth day. Travel Light, Dear Sister . . .

------

Recently rediscovered a treasure trove of images from Sraddha’s trip with Rama ( Rama Jyoti Vernon Legacy ) to Afghanistan in February of 2004. It was a grand adventure that involved Sraddha chaining herself to their luggage at the Moscow airport to keep it from being stolen, arriving in Kabul a day earlier than was on their host Marnie’s calendar, with no place to stay, so settling into an odd guesthouse. Visiting refugees, villagers, initiating a women’s project, and taking a pot-hole ridden 14-hour, teeth-jarring journey up to Bamiyan. (A trip that now takes just two hours on a modern road.) You may remember these stories being woven into her retreats at 7 Centers …

Rama and Ruth were in cahoots as usual, co-conspirators of the best kind, soaking it all in and dreaming up all sorts of projects and programs, both being spacious, open-minded, kind-hearted, curious, and deeply committed to their spiritual paths and their communities.

Though born two decades apart, Rama and Ruth left this life within two years of each other - and in each other’s birth month. Perhaps they are in the heavens together, busy on other-worldly things connected to their mission to end - or at least soften - suffering for all beings.

Today, we honor Sraddha on her birth day. Unconventional, creative, deeply community-oriented with a rich interior life. A big thinker, a spiritual seeker, a talented teacher, a gifted curriculum and program designer with a wonderful laugh and a bit of an imp at heart.

Honoring Ruth Hartung – Sraddhagasgar (Nov 21, 1959 – Jan 17, 2022)

It’s hard to believe that three years have already gone by since Sraddha left us. Many of you have asked if there will be a prayer circle to honor her. This year, we have decided not to hold one, as Monday marks the first anniversary of Fran and Marnie’s mother’s death, as she and Shraddha both left us on the night of the full Wolf Moon, two years and three days apart. Instead, we will take a quiet day to honor both our beloved sister and mother in our own personal ways.

We invite you to take some time to reflect and connect with one another. To help you in your reflection, please consider…

– What would you like to say to Staddha – Ruth?
– What is your favorite memory of her?
– How did you meet Sraddha?
– What is the greatest gift you received from spending time with her or at 7 Centers?

And we would love to hear from you. Send us a note to yoga@7centers.com

Sending you our love and blessings,
Fran, Marnie and Chris

It’s hard to believe it has been twelve years since 7 Centers hosted one of the worlds most sacred activists and conservationists - Linda Tucker - along with local astrologer and photographer Maurice Fernandez for a spell binding evening. This is when we first learned about the legendary White Lions of South Africa and the heroic efforts being made to save them from extinction and restore their ancestral lands.

Yesterday, we were delighted and moved beyond words to join Linda with Maurice again together with other familiar faces for ceremony with sacred Egyptian oils, drumming, singing and epic story telling at Shine Studio, to hear the mythology and tales about the White Lion - a genetic rarity within “Pantheon Leo” that has occurred at just one region on earth: Timbavati, in South Africa. To learn about one of the deepest mysteries of ancient African wisdom - these symbols of hope - and why they are most important at this particular time.

Most astonishingly, we looked at maps which showed how the Great Sphinx - the giant 4,500-year-old cat/ man statue near the Great Pyramid in Egypt - shares the same meridian as Timbavati, and how that that same meridian line extends up through the holy lands as well as the Ukraine and Russia, both currently engulfed in conflict. And we learned about lion-hearted leadership, the importance of ancient wisdom and the role we all can play to help solve some of the conflicts and crisis we are currently facing locally and around the globe.

Happy Angel Birthday, Sraddha! You are so loved and deeply missed by all of us.
. . . . . . . .

If I can let you go as trees let go
Their leaves, so casually, one by one;
If I can come to know what they do know,
That fall is the release, the consummation,
Then fear of time and the uncertain fruit
Would not distemper the great lucid skies
This strangest autumn, mellow and acute.
If I can take the dark with open eyes
And call it seasonal, not harsh or strange
(For love itself may need a time of sleep),
And, treelike, stand unmoved before the change,
Lose what I lose to keep what I can keep,
The strong root still alive under the snow,
Love will endure - if I can let you go.

After a night of rain the brilliant screen
Below my terraced garden falls away.
And there, far off, I see the hills again
On this, a raw and windy, somber day.
Moments of loss, and it is overwhelming
(Crimson and gold gone, that rich tapestry),
But a new vision, quiet and soul-calming,
Distance, design, are given back to me.
This is good poverty, now love is lean,
More honest, harder than it ever was
When all was glamoured by a golden screen.
The hills are back, and silver on the grass,
As I look without passion or despair
Out on a larger landscape, grand and bare.

Exactly one year ago today, Ruth Hartung (Sraddha) passed away. Our lives have been irrevocably changed and we are just beginning to be present to what exactly this means for each one of us. While we are still in the midst of deep grief at losing her and her beautiful community gathering space 7 Centers Yoga Arts in Sedona, we take solace in knowing that she is in a more peaceful place and that her presence and life’s work touched so many. Those who attended her trainings, immersions, courses and workshops, the kirtans and concerts, sat at her dinner table, gardened or cooked or hiked or drank tea and laughed with her over the years. We do hope to help carry forth some aspect of what she created and will be putting thoughts and intentions for this during the upcoming year. Photo credit: Katie Love

Today is the full moon. The Wolf Moon. It is the twelfth full moon since our sister Ruthy (Sraddha) died just as the Wolf Moon was rising on January 17, 2022. As everyone who knew her knows, she absolutely loved the stars and the planets but especially the moon. She used to say that we are magically gifted with the opportunity to start fresh over and over again. If we choose to, we can always begin anew as night passes to the morning, or once a week as Sunday gives way to Monday or with a new moon or at the start of a new season or the new year ….

On a the eve of a full moon, Ruthy would pass out a stack of thick white paper for us to set out overnight to be bathed in moon light. In the morning, with an air of excitement, we would retrieve these mysterious damp papers, edges curled, wrinkles drying stiff. Then we would sit quietly to write down (or more likely loudly discuss ) our intentions for the upcoming day, moon, season, year …

Tonight, we do this ritual together, from opposite sides of the world, at the start of this New Year as we continue to move forward and learn to live without our sister but knowing that she is still by our side.

Much love,

Fran and Marnie

Morning reflections from the road

Loss

When you lose a loved one, it is not the same as other types of loss. It is not something from which you will recover, like varicose vein surgery. Or something you will get over like a missed promotion or a coveted parking spot. You never stop missing that person. Ever. The yearning - for one more conversation, cooking a meal together or laughing hysterically - doesn’t stop. You simply learn to live without them. It’s like losing a limb. You eventually learn to function without it. You will be fine. But you are never the same. The grief ebbs and flows yet it is always there, as an underlying sadness. Time dulls the heartache but that person is never far from your thoughts. Always loved. Never forgotten.

Happy Birthday to our sweet sister Sraddha-Ru on what would have been her 63rd birthday. ❤️💕

Thanks to everyone for coming out this past weekend! Sraddha's celebration of life began on Saturday at dawn with a Sadhana led by Zac, culminated in a moonrise Puja led by Avani and Mira Murphy with Ana Hansen, and ended on Sunday with a candle lighting ceremony followed by the total eclipse of the Flower Moon. Thanks also to Rachel Holly Jackson, Rachel Ali Hollingsworth, Taylor Kurz, Ana Hansen, Marnie Mills, David Hari J*p Meyers, and Katie Love who made Yoga Day happen. Many many thanks to the wonderful people at ChocolaTree for delicious refreshments.

There were many signs of Sraddha throughout the weekend but perhaps the most surprising was the quail who had carefully nested on a dozen eggs for several weeks in a planter on her front porch. They all hatched during the memorial service and the mother had safely spirited them away by the time we got home...
