“In the stillness of the Mountains,
the noise within begins to fade.” -✨🌱

“Umunhum” comes from the Ohlone word for
“Resting Place of the Hummingbird.” The name echoes across five Ohlone languages, mimicking the sound a hummingbird makes while hovering.
The mountain is considered sacred by the Amah Mutsun &Muwekma tribes, &it plays a central role in their creation stories &spiritual traditions.
In Amah Mutsun oral tradition, the Hummingbird bravely retrieved fire from the Badger People &brought it to the top of Mount Umunhum. The fire ignited in Hummingbird’s throat, turning it red—a sacred origin of the bird’s coloring.
The region around this mountain was one of the largest Native American population centers in North America, with around 70 different tribes calling it Home. Their sustainable practices helped preserve the mountain’s rich biodiversity.

in the year 1838, You would have been led by candlelight through dark, winding tunnels to the edge of a terrifying bottomless pit. Your guide would have been seventeen-year-old Stephen Bishop, an African American slave who became known around the world for his knowledge of Mammoth Cave.
Bishop needed bravery, intelligence, and curiosity to explore the vast cavern. Using only a lantern, rope, and other basic caving equipment, He found a way to cross the bottomless pit and discover many more miles of incredible grottoes and tunnels. Access to this archeological treasure located at 13mi northwest of Sedona AZ, is by ticketed reservation system to protect it from human impact.
Make your reservations on recreation.gov website/app. Admission is free for children under 2y/o.
Also, be aware that the site closes according to the weather of the day for visitors’ safety so plan accordingly.
Getting there is via rough gravel roads, give yourself time to drive safely &make it there with enuff time for your tour.
There’s much iCan tell You about this place but iEncourage You to go see it for yourselves.
