SGNO 2025 Symposium Day 3 highlights

Day 3 of the 40th Annual SGNO Symposium began with a delicious breakfast for all attendees. Following the breakfast, Executive Director Angela Ladner presided over the SGNO business meeting.

After the business meeting, Leigh Minchew, president of SGNO, introduced Kim Thistlewaite, BSN, RN IV, ONC, who spoke on Managing Side Effects of Radiation in the Setting of Gynecologic Cancer. Following Kim was Elizabeth Neupert, BSN, RN, OCN, of New Orleans, LA who spoke on STEEL MAGNOLIAS: Shared Telehealth for Multidisciplinary Gynecologic Cancer Survivorship. Both presentations were well received.

Kim then drew for a door prize and the winner was Julie Rodgriquez of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The next speaker, Dr. Amelia Jernigan, was introduced by Elizabeth Neupert. Dr. Jernigan presented on Hot Girl Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). This, too, was a very well-received presentation.

The final presenter was introduced by Kim. Dana DeMoss, MSN, RN, WHNP-BC spoke on Life after Radical Vulvectomy.
Kim presented Dana with a speaker’s certificate and gift and the meeting was adjourned until next year’s 41st annual symposium.

The date and location have not been set but will be communicated to the membership when it is determined.

The 40th Annual SGNO Symposium was filled with relevant continuing education that attendees could take back and readily apply in their practices. Special thanks to the programming committee for ensuring that attendees received the best CE possible.

SGNO 2025 Symposium Day 2 highlights

Day 2 of the 40th Annual SGNO Symposium began with a welcome by SGNO president Leigh Minchew of Mobile, AL. She then introduced Dana DeMoss of Nashville, TN who introduced the keynote speaker, Gia Ruggiero.

Gia is a nurse and gynecologic cancer survivor from Cookeville, TN who spoke on her Personal Journey of Self-Blame after Receiving a Gynecological Cancer Diagnosis. The room was very moved by her presentation. In attendance with Gia was her son, Jordan, who was born at the time of her diagnosis. Kim Thistlewaite, VP of SGNO, presented Gia with a speaker’s certificate, gift, and honorarium in appreciation for sharing her story.

Gia was asked to draw for the first door prize of the day and the winner was Lynae Cunningham, of Ramsey, MN.

Kim introduced Leigh Minchew, PhD, DNP, CRNP, WHNP-BC, PMHNP-BCP, of Mobile, AL, who presented on Self-Blame Attribution in Women with Gynecological Cancer. Dr. Minchew completed her dissertation on the topic and is an expert in the field.

During a brief break, members of the SGNO Board gathered for a photo. After the break, the attendees reconvened for a 40th Symposium Anniversary Luncheon that included a menu of delicious foods and fun yacht rock music!

Following the luncheon, Kim introduced the next speaker, Jeanice Hansen, LCSW, OSW-C, of Frederick, CO, who spoke on Professional Boundaries: When Caring Has Its Limits.

Another door prize was awarded to Amanda Birdsong of AL!

Following the presentation, Kim introduced Nora M. Lersch, DNP, FNP-BC, AOCNP, CSC, MSCP of Portland, Oregon who presented on Where S*x Fits Into Cancer Treatment.

After a scheduled break of delicious, assorted cookies, Kim introduced the final speaker of the day, Daphne Hutto, DNP, CRNP, WHNP-BC of Grand Bay, AL who spoke about A Lived Clinical Case Study of Molar Pregnancy: The Dual Perspective of Nurse and Patient. Daphne’s husband Brad was also present for her presentation.

The meeting was adjourned for the day and many attendees attended an industry dinner that evening.

SGNO 2025 Symposium Day 1 Highlights - Denver, CO

The 40th annual SGNO Symposium opened with a welcome by SGNO President Leigh Minchew of Mobile, AL and Kim Thistlewaite of Auburn, ME. Kim presented Leigh with an appreciation gift for serving as president. Special thanks was extended to the University of South Alabama for accrediting the Continuing Education.

Kim introduced the first CE speaker, Bailey Petry, LCSW of CO who spoke on Social Determinants of Health and Their Impact on Oncology Care. Upon completion, Kim presented Bailey with a speaker’s certificate, gift, and honorarium.

Leigh drew for our first door prize of the conference and the winner was Megan Gentry of Huntsville, AL.

Kim introduced the next CE speaker, Tracy Brown, DNP, CRNP, WHNP-BC, who spoke about Understanding Osteoporosis Assessment and Treatment Options for Women with Gynecological Cancer. Upon completion, Kim presented Tracy with a speaker’s certificate, gift, and honorarium.

A scheduled break was enjoyed by the attendees which included coffee, sodas, waters, brownies, and popcorn.

Leigh drew for the second door prize of the conference and the winner was Rachel Ketteman of Huntsville, AL.

Kim introduced the next CE speaker, Dr. Jason Lachance of Maine, who presented on Communicating Uncertainty Between Patients and Providers. Kim, works as his nurse.

Leigh drew for the last door prize of the day and the winner was Ginny Westbrook of Huntsville, AL.

Attendees transitioned to the SGO AHP session entitled Insight into Difficult Conversations in GYN ONC: Overview of MAID for CE credit through SGO AHP.

Following the last session, SGO hosted an Opening Reception for all SGO AHP and SGNO attendees.
