So - the cat's out of the bag: scenes from Tom Hanks' new movie, "A Man Called Otto" were filmed here at the cemetery all day on March 29th. (The movie is based on the book, A Man Called Ove.)
Mr. Hanks plus about 130 of his "closest friends" (crew), many many trucks, a snow-making machine, a fog-making machine, a 1960 Belair, two cats, special trees for the background (one flowering and one not) and a fairly large drone maneuvered around the cemetery grounds while Ted and I looked on. It was about 22 degrees and felt like 19 - at one point I couldn't feel my feet! We didn't get a chance to meet The Man, The Myth, The Legend, but....this is as close as we got. He spent a lot of time sitting in a lawn chair in Section A speaking to his wife's headstone. The movie is to be released around Christmastime.
Thanks to new Board member Brian Jeffe planting hundreds of bulbs behind the Mausoleum, we have new beauty at the cemetery!

There are such a wide variety of moths clinging to the office walls on any given morning. This pale green one ("Pale Beauty" and also known as "Fringed Looper") stayed very still today while I took its picture.

Snowy day in the cemetery!
The weekend before Thanksgiving! It promises to be a very different holiday this year. We hope you are getting ready to celebrate in whatever way makes sense for you, so please be safe and smart! The cemetery will be closed on Thursday only next week, and open Monday-Wednesday and Friday. The gate will be open as usual, and also through the weekend.
On Saturday, July 4th, at 9:00 a.m., a convoy of restored military vehicles from the First Frontier Mechanized Cavalry will visit the Veterans Section, the Fame Civil War Monument, and hold a brief ceremony at the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial.
The public is invited to this free outdoor event.
Some views around the cemetery this Memorial Day weekend....
The cemetery received its new flags in time for Memorial Day, courtesy of the Allegheny County Veterans Administration. Fame, the Civil War monument, is displaying its new flags, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions, the cemetery will not be hosting the wreath-laying ceremony here on Memorial Day this year.
There will be no Memorial Day service at the cemetery this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Flags will be placed on veterans' graves by the American Legion and VFW as usual sometime the week before.
