At Neuro RehabCare, meaningful moments unfold through purposeful play and gentle movement. In our Games with Gals session, the group experienced Hues and Cues for the first time—an award-winning game of colorful communication where players use one- or two-word clues to guide others toward guessing a specific hue from a grid of 480 shades.

This sparked creativity, laughter, and collaborative ‘aha!’ moments while encouraging standing, gentle movement, critical thinking, problem-solving, and meaningful socialization.

Earlier, Maddy led a delightful taste-testing activity that brought smiles through sensory engagement and friendly competition, fostering social connections, cognitive stimulation, and overall well-being. We followed with Cristin’s chair yoga session, which promoted improved flexibility, balance, mindfulness, and emotional health—key supports for physical and neurological recovery.

These activities beautifully illustrate how fun and therapy intertwine to nurture independence, confidence, and joy on the brain injury and neurological rehabilitation journey. Thank you to our resilient clients and dedicated team for making every day brighter.

At Neuro RehabCare Waterloo, we’ve developed a staff training series called Supporting Dignity After Brain Injury.

These realistic scenarios help our team deepen awareness and empathy by stepping into the lived experiences of people with brain injuries. Through practical situations, staff practice respectful communication, compassionate support, and ways to uphold each person’s dignity every step of the rehabilitation journey.

We’re committed to ongoing learning as a team—so everyone we serve feels truly valued, respected, and empowered. 💙

At Neuro RehabCare, we celebrate every milestone and special moment with the same love and support our clients’ families would—and alongside them.

Juan’s birthday brought so much joy today! Maddy sweetly started the morning by playing a Spanish “Happy Birthday” song just for him. His face lit up when he saw his beautiful cake, inscribed with “Feliz cumpleaños Juan!”

We’re honored to share these heartfelt celebrations and will always be here to cheer on every achievement, big and small, as part of our extended family.

We welcomed motivational speaker Tagen to Neuro RehabCare for an uplifting session!

He shared his powerful journey of overcoming a life-changing injury and the challenges along the way, connecting deeply with our group through honesty, resilience, and encouragement.

Thank you, Tagen, for joining us and opening up so generously. He’s happy to return anytime—to speak again or connect personally with anyone navigating similar experiences.

Stories like these remind us of the power of shared strength and community.

Our team creatively integrates clients’ passions into real-world therapy for meaningful progress.

At the Missouri Big Buck & Outdoor Show and Kansas City Home & Flower Show at Bartle Hall, clients practiced skills while enjoying the event:

• Dominic and Damon explored booths with Braiden (Dominic eyed the Cybertruck!), Damon laughed all day on his first group outing.

• Max nailed his best car transfer yet with Lacy, then posed with police officers.

• Ryan charmed vendors with jokes and introductions.

• Graham climbed boat steps in therapy with Maddy and posed with deer antlers.

• Randy socialized and collected free samples.

• Gary used his manual chair for longer outings with Cristin, focusing on transfers and vendor chats.

Maddy and Dominic brought home well-behaved pit bull Blue Grass for a few hours via KC Pet Project’s program—adding responsibility, joy, and social interaction.

Chris, Juan, Braiden, Perri, and Ana delivered Meals on Wheels in Shawnee, building navigation, directions, counting, transfers, stair climbing, and community skills—with lots of laughs.

These outings show how we tailor therapy to interests and everyday life for real gains!

Our Activities Coordinator, Ashley, recently led an engaging Jeopardy session that challenged clients’ memory, response time, and sparked friendly competition among housemates. Anne and Tim emerged as team winners and enjoyed selecting prizes from our prize boxes!

In therapy, Sonja supported Heidi in achieving her cooking goal. Through consistent progress in occupational and physical therapy—plus dedicated carry-over into daily routines—Heidi continues to build standing tolerance and independence with tasks like meal preparation.

We’re truly inspired by her steady gains and growth!

We’ve been keeping busy at Neuro RehabCare, cherishing meaningful moments that nurture recovery, connection, and joy!

Randy surprised Ana with a birthday card and orchids from the team, showing how small acts of kindness build community.

Chris, nearing graduation and discharge, chose a special Kansas City outing to Barnes & Noble and Oak Park Mall, sharing laughter with Maddy, Ana, Alexa, and Juan—especially over Alexa’s tostada mishap!

Juan lit up seeing our post of his KC Pet Project volunteering and had us all smiling with stories of a chubby shelter puppy.

Braiden, Jonathan, Max, and Juan enjoyed a Friday night hockey game with their Christmas auction tickets. Thank you to Braiden and Jonathan for their enthusiasm in organizing it—Max and Juan bundled up and embraced the evening despite the cold.

Emma’s homemade spring rolls brought everyone together over warm, comforting food.

These experiences reflect the heart of neurorehabilitation: fostering independence, deepening relationships, and celebrating joy along the journey. Grateful for our wonderful clients and team.

Heidi and Anne participated in Brain Injury Advocacy Day at the Kansas State Capitol today. They met with their state representative to share their personal experiences with brain injury, describe the daily challenges they navigate, and explain how the Brain Injury Alliance of Kansas and Greater Kansas City provides essential support and resources.

At Neuro RehabCare, we are deeply committed to empowering individuals recovering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI) to advocate for themselves and for others in similar situations. By supporting our clients in these efforts, we help amplify their voices in important conversations about policy, services, and long-term independence.

We are grateful for opportunities like this to collaborate with community partners and advance greater understanding and access to quality care for those affected by neurological injuries.

Our Neuro RehabCare team had the privilege of volunteering at KC Pet Project, a remarkable organization dedicated to lifesaving animal welfare in Kansas City—providing care, adoptions, and support for thousands of pets each year.

Our group prepared ‘pupsicles’ (frozen treats) for the dogs, an engaging activity that promoted hands-on participation and skill-building. This meaningful outing offered valuable therapeutic opportunities: residents strengthened fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, determination, and adaptive problem-solving while contributing to the community.

Highlights included touring the facility, spending time in the cat room (where adorable kittens and cats captured everyone’s hearts!), visiting the small dog and puppy areas, and meeting a sweet dog in an outdoor kennel.
moments: Graham independently lifted a heavy water pitcher, Juan carefully crafted each treat with genuine care and attention to detail, and Ryan showed incredible persistence using Velcro and a spoon to scoop food and add green beans—always finding creative ways to fully participate.

Experiences like this not only support animal welfare but also foster joy, purpose, social interaction, and functional gains essential to neurological recovery.

A heartfelt thank you to KC Pet Project for graciously hosting us and making this day so special. Special shoutout to Angela for her thoughtful preparation, warm welcome, and engaging tour—she truly elevated the experience for our entire group!

Grateful for partners like KC Pet Project who help us build stronger connections in our Kansas City community.

We were honored to welcome Tajea McCoy as our motivational speaker at Neuro RehabCare Kansas City.
Tajea was joined by her supportive family, whose presence added warmth and encouragement to the event—it was truly inspiring to see loved ones rallying around her journey.

With her genuine warmth, generosity, humor, and powerful motivation, Tajea connected deeply with our clients. Her relatable story, infectious sense of humor, and radiant smile truly brightened the room!

It was especially meaningful to see clients like Max actively engaging with questions about her experience, as his own injuries share similarities.

We were amazed to learn this was Tajea’s first motivational speaking engagement—she confidently took the microphone and shared her story with such grace and impact. She did an outstanding job!

Thank you, Tajea, for making the trip to NRC and sharing your strength with us. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

A group from our program—including Gary, Chris, Maddy, Ana, and Jonathan—recently visited Costco to select fresh flowers for the NRC Flower Bar!

Chris confidently navigated the aisles, and Gary enjoyed a successful outing—his third and still going strong.
Clients created stunning arrangements: heartfelt gifts for loved ones and cheerful touches to brighten our shared space.

The afternoon filled with Valentine’s spirit—vibrant blooms everywhere, spontaneous singing, dancing, and plenty of laughter!

The NRC team added extra warmth by surprising each participant with a personalized gift: thoughtful handwritten messages from our therapists and Ana, favorite drinks, and sugar-free treats tailored just for them.

The surprise, gratitude, and radiant smiles said it all—we loved every joyful moment!

🌿🚁🌊 What a week of real-life wins at NRC!

Kicked off with a succulent workshop at Family Tree Nursery—clients chose plants, built mini gardens (OT hand-eye + decision-making magic!), maneuvered wheelchairs through the greenhouse (PT mobility in motion), and couldn’t stop smiling.

Then Dominic cashed in his prize for an epic helicopter ride over KC with PT Braiden—first time for both, pure joy after a morning of planting & lunch!

Capped it with our Sea Life Aquarium outing: touching starfish (helpful staff assist!), crawling under the stingray tunnel, racking up steps, standing practice at exhibits, reading facts, mesmerized by fish—biggest smiles all around. Now everyone wants an aquarium at NRC!

These outings deliver more than fun—they provide a vital change of scenery and community connection that drives meaningful growth after TBI and SCI. By applying OT and PT skills in real-world settings, clients build independence, boost neuroplasticity through enriched experiences, strengthen social bonds, reduce isolation, and reignite motivation for long-term progress and quality of life. Community, fresh air, adventure, and therapy beyond the clinic walls = true recovery in action.
