Putting on the Armor of God
7/12/05 Christian Nix
Putting on the armor of God. In a world of uncertainty and constant change there has never been a more profound statement. We have been admonished by our church leaders and prophet regarding the importance of putting on the armor of God. But what does that mean, “to put on the armor of God”? How do we go about doing so? Fortunately, we have been blessed with The Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ. This sacred record was given to all as a guide in these uncertain times. In its pages we find so many examples of faith and honor. One example that comes to mind is that of Captain Moroni. Here was a man who loved his God, his country, and his fellow man. A man who would have given his life gladly for all that he believed in. In the book of Alma we learn of his incredible strength and character.
“And it came to pass that he wrent his coat, and he took a piece thereof and wrote upon it, in memory of our God, our religion, and freedom and our peace, our wives and our children. And he fastened it upon the end of a pole. And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate and his shields and girded on his armor about his loins. He took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, and he called it the Title of Liberty. And he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should be a band of Christians remaining to possess the land.”
Moroni was not a man of words, but rather he was a man of action. Throughout the book of Alma we learn how he continually struggled and fought for the freedoms of his people. There is one more account in the book of Alma that gives us a clear understanding of who Captain Moroni was. “Yea, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever. Yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.”
As we read further in the book of Alma we learn of Helaman. Here is a man who was given the awesome responsibility of overseeing the commission of two thousand young Lamanite boys who never had before seen battle. We know that Helaman felt a keen sense of responsibility for his young soldiers, and he loved every one of them as if they were his own sons. As the war between the Nephites and the Lamanites increased Helaman knew that soon his two thousand young soldiers would be called upon to defend their homes and family. And when the call came they all responded with one voice, saying, “Father, behold our God is with us, and He will not suffer that we should fall. Then let us go forth. We would not slay our brethren if they would leave us alone. Therefore, let us go, lest they should overpower the army of Antipus.”
Brothers and sisters, when I first began my talk I proposed the question, “What does it mean to put on the armor of God?” I would humbly submit to you that it means to live the Gospel throughout our daily lives, be an example in your own neighborhoods. Walk tall in the knowledge that each of us is a son or daughter of God. Always carry your testimony in your heart. Be mindful of the countless blessings your Father in Heaven has given you through His Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
