Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): Know the Signs, Save a Life

Traumatic Brain Injuries are often invisible at first—but the damage can be life-threatening. TBIs occur when a blow or jolt to the head disrupts normal brain function. Even a seemingly minor head injury can have serious consequences if not recognized early.

Key Warning Signs:
• Unequal pupils (one larger than the other)
• Repeated vomiting or nausea
• Confusion, disorientation, or slurred speech
• Loss of consciousness (even briefly)
• Severe headache that worsens
• Seizures
• Clear fluid leaking from nose or ears

What to Do:
• Call 911 immediately if you observe these signs. Time is critical.
• Keep the person still and prevent further injury.
• Monitor breathing and responsiveness while waiting for EMS.

Early recognition can prevent permanent damage—or even save a life. Don’t wait. Learn the signs. Take action.

Did you know a person can bleed to death from an arterial injury in under 2 minutes?
This type of bleeding is fast, forceful, and often bright red—spurting in rhythm with the heartbeat. It doesn’t take long for someone to lose enough blood to fall unconscious or die if help doesn’t come quickly.

Uncontrolled bleeding is one of the leading causes of preventable death after a traumatic injury. According to the National Trauma Institute, up to 35% of pre-hospital deaths in trauma cases are due to exsanguination—massive blood loss. These are lives that could often be saved with timely first aid and bleeding control.

In many cases, bystanders are the first and only line of defense until emergency responders arrive. A tourniquet, firm pressure, or even knowing how to pack a wound can literally mean the difference between life and death.

But here’s the problem:
Most people don’t act—not because they don’t care, but because they don’t know what to do. First aid training removes fear and replaces it with confidence.

At Barnes CPR & First Aid, we’re here to change that. We teach you how to respond—not freeze—when life is on the line.

Learn first aid. Be the help until help arrives.
You may never know whose life you’ll save… but they’ll never forget it.

I TEACH MORE THAN CPR.

I get it, CPR is more demanding than first aid for certifications, for most jobs.

But First Aid Saves Lives — And It’s More Than Just CPR

Knowing CPR is critical, but first aid goes far beyond that. Emergencies don’t wait for professionals to arrive — and sometimes, what you do in those first few minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

Would you know how to stop life-threatening bleeding? What if someone was poisoned? Bitten by an animal? Burned? Choking? These aren’t rare emergencies — they happen every day, in homes, workplaces, schools, and public spaces.

First aid isn’t just for healthcare professionals — it’s for parents, teachers, coaches, coworkers, and everyday people. It’s for you.

Investing a few hours to learn first aid could save a life. Maybe even someone you love.

Be the help until help arrives. Learn first aid. Be ready.

I’ve seen a husband grieve his newlywed wife, a child take their final breath, and I’ve literally held a person together in their final moments.

I don’t just teach life-saving skills, I’m passionate about building safer, stronger communities.

It starts right here, in Kentucky. There are many medical reasons as to why, they are important to understand. But when I go home and I hug my girls and I see them after a long, rough shift, they are my “why.” They are every reason why. And when a child runs up to me and smiles at church, they are why.

“You Can’t Hurt Them—They’re Already Dead.”

Let’s talk about one of the biggest fears people have about performing CPR: “What if I hurt them?”
I get it, it’s scary. You don’t want to cause pain, break ribs, or do the wrong thing. But here’s a powerful truth that every rescuer, professional or bystander, needs to know:

If someone is in cardiac arrest, they’re already clinically dead.
Their heart isn’t beating. Blood isn’t flowing. Oxygen isn’t reaching the brain. In that moment, you can’t make things worse—but you can make them better.

Let’s bust the myth:

Yes, doing CPR properly can break ribs.
You’re pressing 2–2.4 inches deep into the chest at 100–120 compressions per minute. It’s forceful—it has to be. That pressure is what keeps blood circulating, supplying vital oxygen to the brain and organs until professional help arrives.

But guess what? Broken ribs can heal. A dead brain can’t.

Doing nothing is the real harm.

When someone collapses from sudden cardiac arrest, their chance of survival drops by 7–10% every minute without CPR or defibrillation. That’s why immediate action matters. It’s not about perfect technique—it’s about trying.

You are their best chance.
Not the bystander who “waits for EMS.”
Not the person who hesitates out of fear.
You. Right there, right now.

If you ever find yourself in that moment, remember this:

Push hard. Push fast. Don’t be afraid. You’re not hurting them—you’re helping them live.
