Dr. Faber performed an experiment with his girls to show them what pop can do to teeth. They put a tooth in pop for 2 weeks to see what would happen. Pop can cause significant damage to teeth due to its acidity and sugar content. The acids in pop, including carbonic, phosphoric, and citrus acids, erode tooth enamel making teeth more susceptible to cavities and sensitivity. Sugar in pop feeds bacteria in the mouth, which then produce more acid, further contributing to enamel erosion and decay.
Dr. Faber recommends that pop be consumed once in a while as a treat and always with a meal (not sipped on all day long). It takes 1/2 an hour for our acid levels in our mouth to go back to neutral after eating or drinking. If you are sipping on pop all day long, you are constantly keeping your mouth in an acidic state.
