Why work on speech before kindergarten?

The earlier kids get support, the easier it is to fix speech sound errors. Signs to look for may include:
🚩Hard to understand compared to other kids their age
🚩Gets frustrated when talking
🚩Speech errors that aren’t improving
🚩Avoids talking in groups

Communicating effectively helps kids feel confident.

Early help can make a
big difference—and can set kids up for a smoother
start to kindergarten.

📚Before you start reading, take a moment to look at the cover together. Talk about what the story might be about, who the characters could be, or where the story might take place.
📚As you read, pause briefly and wonder aloud about what might happen next. You can ask your child—or model it yourself if they’re not into answering yet:
“Ooooh, I think the ___ might….”
📚The best part about making predictions? There’s no right or wrong answer. It’s all about thinking, wondering, and having fun with the story together.

✨ I feel so passionate about this for toddlers and preschoolers because there is so much that can be done early on to support communication. If you want to chat, I offer free phone consultations. Send me a message at Chris@CommunicationPlayground.com to find out more!

Another day, another family telling me their doctor told them to wait and see 😭😭😭 AND this one was a 17 month old boy with signs of autism AND an Autistic sibling. And the doctor said wait until *3 years old* to get evaluated for speech 😡🤬

Whyyyyyyyy make this child wait for support for a year and a half?!? Nope nope nope.

If someone tells you to wait and see- please 1) see a specialist, and 2) if a specialist tells you this and you aren’t comfortable with it, get another opinion!

Note: I recognize many people are on long waiting lists and seeing messages like this are confusing and overwhelming. I see you. This post is aimed towards providers, and also families who could have access to support, or need access to waitlists. It’s also true that when parents are told to “wait” they may not take a delay seriously and not seek support via social media or parent education during this waiting period either. Therpay isn’t the only option and there is LOTS parents can learn free online! ❤️❤️❤️

There are different types of speech disorders? A phonological disorder is just one of them. It also happens to be one area I am passionate - helping children be understood!

It is always helpful to look at the whole child and support all areas of development. There are many topics that we don't hear about unless there is an observed issue that we are trying to figure out. Here is one that is good to know (and another reason play is sooooo important)!

🧠 Why Crossing the Midline is So Important for Kids' Development! 🚶‍♀️

Did you know that one simple skill—crossing the midline—plays a huge role in your child’s physical, cognitive, and emotional development? 🤔 When kids learn to reach across their body (like using their left hand to touch their right shoulder), they're strengthening vital connections in the brain that support coordination, focus, and even reading and writing! 📚✍️

Crossing the midline helps with:
✨ Bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body together)
✨ Hand-eye coordination
✨ Problem-solving and motor planning
✨ Attention and focus

Want some fun activities you can do at home to help your child practice crossing the midline—without even realizing they’re learning? Comment 🎉 and we will send the article your way!
