Over time, some of us become so good at reading rooms, adapting, performing, helping, succeeding, or belonging that we lose sight of where the role ends and the self begins.

But beneath all the identities we inhabit, something quieter waits patiently.

In this new issue of "Remembering What We Know," I reflect on theater, adaptation, the Enneagram, and the long journey toward discovering the self beneath the roles.

On identity, performance, and the part of us that remains For most of my adult life, I worked in the theater. I spent decades as an actor, director, and teacher, living inside a profession devoted to the study of human behavior.

Awareness isn't transformation. It's invitation.

In this new issue of Remembering What We Know, I explore why insight alone rarely changes us—and why the real work begins when we choose to live what we know before we fully understand where it leads.

Grief may be love trying to continue being love after the object of that love is gone.

In this new issue of Remembering What We Know, I explore how pain wakes us, how grief changes us, and why truth doesn’t always make life easier—but can make us more conscious.

On grief, pain, and the cost of becoming conscious One of the more difficult truths to accept is that living in alignment with what is true doesn't necessarily guarantee an easier life. It doesn't spare us grief, prevent loss, or exempt us from pain.

Dear friend Guirlaine Belizaire's podcast, "Sacred Cracks, Crevices, and Rubies" is unlike any other. Heart and soul-centered, thoughtful, and spacious. It was a privilege to be invited and to share with her. Here's a link to the first of several vignettes from our conversation she'll be releasing in the coming weeks. This one's entitled "CommUnity."

For many years, I lived inside an assumption I never consciously chose. Because there was a real possibility I had inherited Huntington’s Disease from my mother, I quietly believed something about my life:

I wasn’t allowed to dream too large.

If my time might be shorter than most, and if the final years of my life could include profound disability, then perhaps it made sense to live carefully. To keep my ambitions modest. To avoid reaching too far.

I even had thoughtful explanations for why that was reasonable.

But beneath those explanations lived a deeper belief: there wouldn’t be enough room—or enough time—for me to fully become myself.

In the second issue of my newsletter Remembering What We Know, I explore how assumptions like these quietly shape the lives we live.

Because many of the forces guiding our decisions are not external circumstances.

They are the invisible beliefs we have absorbed about what is possible for us.
And sometimes the first step toward reclaiming our lives is simply noticing the stories we’ve been living inside.

You can read the new issue here.

If it resonates, I’d love for you to subscribe and join the ongoing conversation. Because the wisdom that guides our lives is often already present within us—waiting quietly beneath the noise.

For forty years, I lived with a question quietly shaping my life: had I inherited Huntington’s Disease from my mother?

My mother died from the disease in 1984. Each child of an affected parent has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene. My older brother and sister both did, and later died from it. In some instances, they passed the gene to their own children.

Living with that possibility taught me something profound.

We inherit more than genes. We inherit stories about who we are and what our lives might become.

Some of those stories serve us. Some limit us before we even realize it.

And sometimes the most important work of a lifetime is learning how to question the stories we were handed.

Today I’m sharing the first issue of my new LinkedIn newsletter, exploring this idea of inheritance—not only genetic inheritance, but the narratives that shape how we imagine our lives.

It’s about the space between what we inherit and what we choose.

If this theme resonates with you, I’d love for you to read the first issue and subscribe.

While we may not choose the story we’re born into, we all have the capacity to become its author.

We inherit more than genes and family histories. We inherit assumptions about who we are, what's possible for us, and the life we are allowed to imagine.
