🗣Speech Therapy Tip:

👀 👀How can I get my child to look at me while we play?

It’s really hard to make eye contact when we tower above our little ones. You will get the most ‘bang for your buck’ by moving off the couch or chair and go down onto the floor and then position yourself directly opposite him or her so that you are face to face with them. This way, as soon as they look up from their play we will be right next to them, making eye contact easier.

👄👄Why can’t my child make the _ sound??

There are developmental milestones for when we acquire different speech sounds. Sometimes you will hear your child say the L sound, for example, just perfectly when you ask him or her to say ‘lah.’ And then, when you ask them to say ‘playground’ or ‘lady bug’ you can’t hear that good L sound anymore. This is because we need to first master sounds in smaller chunks before they can transfer or ‘generalize’ to longer words or phrases. If the transfer isn’t taking place organically you might need some assistance from a certified speech-language pathologist (SLP).

📖📖How can I get my child to focus when we look at books?

Some children love to hear ALL the words on the pages in a book and some children can hardly sit for a few. We can help kids focus by choosing books with fewer words and adjust how we read the words. Maybe I need to pair a sound or action with the picture we’re looking at (like pretend to swim if there are people swimming in the picture, or pretend to eat the food in a picture). Try it!

👏👏How do I get my child to use longer sentences?

We are all different kinds of learners- some of us are auditory, visual, kinesthetic or a unique combination of all three. Pairing a tactile cue with auditory information can help some young children expand their sentence length. Tapping the arm or shoulder ‘as-I-say-the-words’ (five taps, there) helps the child ‘feel’ that words are distinct units and can aid in increasing imitation.

👂First Things First- Can My Child Hear Me?👂

Always have your child's hearing tested by a certified audiologist if you are worried about their speech. Too many times kids can have extra gunk or fluid that goes undetected and can impact how kids can hear- it's hard to fix something if I can't hear it!
