🛒 ¡Vamos de compras al supermercado!
Let’s go shopping at the supermarket!

Role-plays are incredibly powerful in language learning, especially when they’re playful and hands-on. Pull out your Spanish food vocab list and try these simplified conversations at home together!

These kinds of exchanges are perfect for younger learners who are just getting started. If you don’t already speak Spanish, you can learn right alongside your child. 💛 Language grows beautifully when it’s shared.

Our SpanOut Language Explorers paired these conversations with mini shopping baskets and tiny food cards to bring the experience to life. My favorite part is always watching the kids try out new words and getting a feel for what it's like to say them!

Yes, these are bite size lessons. So what’s going on in class? What do we accomplish in one hour of Spanish enrichment?

This term is all about food, and this week’s flow went something like this:

>Categorize food into frutas y verduras.
Instructor says ZANAHORIA
Language explorers say ES UNA VERDURA
>Categorize food by los colores, moving around the classroom together.
>Use new words to make real sentences
>Bring language to life by making our own ZANAHORIA.

(Differentiation by age group: older learners expanded this activity by exploring more food types this week.)

It makes us so happy to see learners are excited to create and WANT to keep coming back. Each lesson builds confidence and a love for the language, one small step at a time, which is the most important part because language learning is lifelong 💛💚

Small-group moments make a big difference.
Working together at the whiteboard keeps students active, engaged, and thinking in Spanish. Even simple tasks become dynamic when learners collaborate, move, and respond to guided questions in the target language.

Last week’s enrichment session marked a strong start to our 7-week learning term. Week one focused on reviewing colors, numbers 1–20, and key vocabulary and phrases connected to a STEM challenge. Using colorful palitos (popsicle sticks) and prensas (clips), students were challenged first to meet a minimum height requirement and then to build la torre más alta (the tallest tower).

A standout moment was the excitement and nerves as students completed the tallest tower, successfully finishing it with each level forming a different color of the rainbow.

Younger learners focused on exploring the materials and creating structures that could stand independently. As they worked, students were asked questions in Spanish about colors and height, practiced counting inches using a ruler, and counted palitos and prensas during construction.

As the term continues, number learning will continue with the goal of shifting away from counting in English and translating, toward directly understanding numerical value through Spanish. Additional number-focused activities are planned, along with an objective of introducing food vocabulary later this term.

Our language explorers are just getting started, and more learning is on the way. Follow us for more updates.
