Last week’s enrichment session marked a strong start to our 7-week learning term. Week one focused on reviewing colors, numbers 1–20, and key vocabulary and phrases connected to a STEM challenge. Using colorful palitos (popsicle sticks) and prensas (clips), students were challenged first to meet a minimum height requirement and then to build la torre más alta (the tallest tower).
A standout moment was the excitement and nerves as students completed the tallest tower, successfully finishing it with each level forming a different color of the rainbow.
Younger learners focused on exploring the materials and creating structures that could stand independently. As they worked, students were asked questions in Spanish about colors and height, practiced counting inches using a ruler, and counted palitos and prensas during construction.
As the term continues, number learning will continue with the goal of shifting away from counting in English and translating, toward directly understanding numerical value through Spanish. Additional number-focused activities are planned, along with an objective of introducing food vocabulary later this term.
