It is one of the great ironies of history that Salem, MA has more practicing witches than anywhere in the United States. With the introduction of the Malleus Maleficarum, written in 1486, the rise of Witch Hunts in Europe began and carried through for another 300 years. An estimated 35-60,000 were executed, including many elderly and single women: Those who were the outliers of society at the time.

There are 20 stones in Salem's Tribute Memorial, one for each victim executed. The trials in 1692 Salem resulted in 19 hangings and one man, Giles Corey, who was crushed to death over a period of three days. When given the choice to confess to witchcraft or be given heavier stones as punishment, his only reply was "More Weight". It is said he cursed all future generations of Sheriffs in Salem with his dying breath. To this day the Sheriff lives outside of the city limits.

Who else is their family's unofficially appointed record keeper? My family were immigrants from Germany and Ireland who came to the US around 1848. There is no record of them coming through Ellis Island, and it's believed they came to America via Canada. My grandparents still spoke German when I was small and I grew up speaking it with them until I was around four years old.
