Some plants just get it. 🌞
St. john’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the most studied herbs on the planet, and the research on mood is genuinely compelling. multiple large-scale reviews have found it performs comparably to prescription antidepressants for mild to moderate depression, with fewer people discontinuing use due to side effects.
The science points to three active compounds, hypericin, hyperforin, and adhyperforin, that work together to support healthy levels of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline in the brain. Basically, this little yellow flower knows how to tend to your neurotransmitters.
Herbalists have known this for a long time. st. john’s wort has been used for low mood, melancholy, and emotional heaviness since the ancient greeks. paracelsus was recommending it for depression back in 1525. we’re not exactly breaking new ground here, just honoring old wisdom with modern understanding.
We reach for it when:
🌿 the days feel heavier than they should
🌿 motivation is hard to find
🌿 mood feels flat or inconsistent
🌿 winter is doing its thing (yes, there’s research on SAD too)
A few important notes: this herb takes time, think weeks. And if you’re currently taking SSRIs, MAOIs, or oral contraceptives, please talk to your provider first. st. john’s wort has real, documented drug interactions that matter.
slow medicine. real plants. tended with care. 🖤
