Do you know how change happens? I feel like we’re taught to muscle thru and force ourselves into a new habit, and if it doesn’t work, it’s cus we’re bad at stuff.
But the thing is, that’s not how change works in the first place.

Change can happen incredibly quickly, but it has to start by lighting up the brain state from the last time something happened that you want to change. From that specific state of mind, it’s just a couple tweaks to get your brain to try out a new neural pathway and create the potential of doing things differently.

There’s several change strategies that do this, such as some types of somatic coaching, emdr and hypnosis.

The bottom line is this: if you can’t make the changes you want to, YET… don’t keep trying something that isn’t working for you - look around for something else.

When I worked in an organization that made us do year goals, I always wrote down the laundry list of peripheral health and habit goals that year after year I “this-will-be-the-year’d it” (yes that’s a verb now). Spoiler alert: it wasn’t that year either 😏

That’s because at the time, I didn’t know how brains work to actually make changes. And without a solid new pathway in my brain, this won’t be the year either. Now that I know how to do that, I make changes so fast sometimes that i wake up one day a week later and realize I’m not struggling anymore.

I’m doing a workshop next week where we’re going to change just one single thing. Not “make a million dollars” or “lose 100 lbs” but make a substantial change in how we approach things. It might be
1. Procrastinate for fewer minutes before I start something.
2. Find more enjoyment when I’m with my kids.
3. Hate house chores 10% less.
4. Reduce rejection sensitivity with family or clients.
5. Allow your finished product to be less perfect.

What would you like to change this year?

“Cheer” and “love” are not the same thing:

“You don’t have to fake a smile this Christmas if your heart feels heavy. It’s okay if joy feels out of reach—this season can be tough when memories linger and loved ones are missing.

Give yourself the freedom to feel it all—the sadness, the stress, the ache. Emotions aren’t enemies; they’re part of healing. Let your tears flow and your thoughts breathe. If you need comfort, lean on someone who cares.

Christmas isn’t just about cheer; it’s about love—including love for yourself. Be gentle with your soul, speak kindly to your heart, and know this:

You are seen, you are valued, and you are deeply loved.”
