Need to snug up the cuffs on your smartCRUTCH a bit so they fit better? You can always add a second layer of padding that will help do the job. smartCRUTCH USA has a great solution that works very well, the "2nd Layer of Padding" that many have found quite helpful.

That said, you can also be creative with other solutions as many of our customers have found. Items like synthetic sheepskin or lambskin paired with double-sided tape or backing can be a comfortable and simple solution. Likewise, a thin layer of foam with adhesive can work very well to help get just the right fit.

If you would like some tips on how to install a second layer of padding, check out this helpful FAQ.

We are often asked what is behind the Zebra Series designs. Great question!

Some may know that in medical slang a ‘zebra’ is a term doctors use for a rare disease or unusual diagnosis. The Ehlers-Danlos Society has a great explanation on the history of how that originated and why they chose it as a symbol.

https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/why-the-zebra/

Because smartCRUTCH is often used by those with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorder, it made perfect sense to create a design that reflected the individuality of those suffering with rare afflictions.

Cheers to all the zebras out there! smartCRUTCH…The Freedom to Move!

Top 10 Reasons to Love Your smartCRUTCH® - Reason #10

Traditional crutches have a narrow, slippery foot that limits where you can go and when you can use them.

The smartCRUTCH™ has a uniquely designed ferrule (crutch tip) with a non-slip grip and an hourglass shape that maximizes surface contact. Ferrules are also available as a replacement part so your smartCRUTCH™ lasts longer.

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is whether insurance will cover the cost of smartCRUTCHes. It is a great and important question and while you can use your HSA/FSA (Health Savings Account) debit card to pay for your crutches on smartcrutch-usa.com, the short answer to the insurance question is "Maybe".

The longer answer is that in the past some customers have had their health insurance reimburse their purchase of smartCRUTCH. Individual insurance policies differ so vastly by medical necessity, provider, state and policy type that there is no one easy answer to this question. Some customers receive full or partial coverage, some are reimbursed the product cost and not shipping, and some are denied in full even with a prescription.

We are unable to guarantee the outcome of your reimbursement so if you are unsure; we suggest your first step is to contact your Insurance Provider ahead of time to confirm your policy inclusions and the process they need you to follow. We can provide you with a ‘sample’ receipt for the product you want so that your insurance company can assess the potential claim using the details on the receipt.

While we regret that we cannot provide a definitive answer, we hope that this additional information is helpful.

Dave finds comfort with smartCRUTCHes after 50 years of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

"I've had rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for over 50 years, and over all that time I've had many operations requiring the use of crutches during recovery. My RA caused my wrists to be fused in an odd angle that pretty much made it impossible to use normal under arm crutches. I wore out the first pair of forearm type of crutches, and about 10 years ago I replaced them with another brand of crutch that was very similar. Both of those crutches worked reasonably well, but they weren't all that comfortable, and their adjustability was minimal.

Fast forward to January of 2015 when we were vacationing in Florida and I broke my leg in a bicycle accident. Well, the crutches were back home in Wisconsin, and I needed crutches immediately in Florida. I searched online and discovered smartCRUTCHES. I ordered a pair & they were great. A lot more comfortable than the ones I'd been using with much better adjustments to make them fit just right. I was delighted." Read more from Dave...

Can People with Chronic Conditions and Weaker Arms Use Forearm Crutches?

Living with a chronic condition often means adapting your lifestyle—and sometimes, that includes using mobility aids to help you stay active and independent. If you’ve been considering forearm crutches but are worried your arms might not be strong enough, you’re not alone. It's a common concern, and the good news is forearm crutches can still be an option, even if arm strength is a challenge.

What Makes Forearm Crutches Different?
Forearm crutches are designed to support your weight through your forearms and hands, rather than your armpits like traditional crutches. They’re often recommended for long-term or part-time use, and many people with chronic conditions find them more comfortable and versatile, especially when dealing with fatigue, joint pain, or balance issues.

What If You Have Weakness in Your Arms?
Chronic conditions such as MS, arthritis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) can affect muscle strength and stamina. If your upper body feels like a limiting factor, here’s what to keep in mind:

-Choose lightweight crutches. Many modern forearm crutches are made from lightweight materials like aluminum or carbon fiber, which make them easier to lift and maneuver.
-Look for ergonomic features. Soft or contoured hand grips can reduce wrist strain, and adjustable cuffs provide better support for varying forearm strength.
-Get the right fit. A professional fitting is important. Poorly adjusted crutches can cause more fatigue or even pain. Physical therapists or mobility specialists can help ensure a safe, supportive setup.
-Build strength gradually. If using crutches feels overwhelming at first, a physical therapist can work with you to improve your upper body strength safely—at your pace and within your energy limits.

You Deserve the Right Support
Managing a chronic condition means making choices that fit your life and body. If forearm crutches sound like a good option, don’t let weaker arms hold you back. With the right equipment, proper fitting, and a bit of support, you might be surprised at how much confidence and mobility they can offer.

Dull and ugly, conventional crutches pay no attention to design or aesthetics. They also have no sense of fashion or fun or individual flair.
