Northern VT is a hotspot for a rare fungal infection:

Common Blastomycosis Symptoms:
Fever: A rise in body temperature.
Cough: Dry or productive cough, sometimes with blood.
Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing or feeling breathless.
Night sweats: Excessive sweating, particularly at night.
Fatigue: Extreme tiredness.
Muscle aches or joint pain: Pain in muscles or joints.
Chest or back pain: Discomfort or pain in the chest or back.
Weight loss: Unexplained loss of body weight.
Skin lesions: Bumps, blisters, or ulcers on the skin.

Severe Blastomycosis Symptoms:
Bone or joint pain: Pain in the bones and joints.
Central nervous system involvement: Symptoms related to the brain and spinal cord, such as headaches, seizures, or altered mental status.

Important Note:
About half of individuals infected with Blastomyces dermatitidis may not experience any symptoms at all.

People with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing severe blastomycosis and experiencing the more serious symptoms.

Blastomycosis can be mistaken for other conditions, such as pneumonia, so it's important to seek medical attention if you suspect you have the infection.

Blastomycosis, a fungal disease, has been cropping up around the Green Mountain State, particularly in three northern counties.
