As Black History Month comes to a close, we pause to honor and celebrate Black funeral professionals β€” past, present, and future.

This is our tribute, an Ode to the Negro Mortician β€” recognizing the dedication, compassion, resilience, and excellence of those who have served our families and communities with dignity and care. Their legacy is woven into our history, their service rooted in love, and their impact everlasting.

We salute the trailblazers who paved the way, the leaders continuing the work today, and the future professionals who will carry the torch forward. Your commitment to honoring life and preserving legacy does not go unnoticed.

One of the most important pieces of equipment in the funeral industry is the casket lowering device. Most times the average person doesn’t think of or even consider it until arrival at the site of internment in the cemetery, but did you know that Before 1894 this task was exclusively done by hand? Taking the risk of grave collapses, injury and damaged caskets, Cemetery workers used ropes and raw manpower to get the task done. This all changed, however after an African American gentleman by the name of Albert C. Richardson (who is also credited with inventing the butter churner and insect exterminator) saw how dangerous and undignified it could be, causing him to invent the modern casket lowering device. A.C. Richardsonβ€˜s device used a system of pulleys and belts to ensure a smooth and controlled descent that not only took cemetery workers out of harms way, but protected decedents caskets and lowered them into the ground in a most dignified manner. Watching our loved ones be interred is never easy, but thanks to Albert C Richardson it’s much more pleasant
