“I’m coming along fine in my health & fitness journey...” “Health & fitness is a journey, not a destination...” are phrases that you may have heard or read on social media for the past few years. I’ll admit to using the word journey in that way and I’ll also admit to throwing an eye roll here & there after hearing/reading a form of the above phrases as well. But after thinking about it for a while, I completely get the comparison.
Back in August of 2008, I saw a picture of myself with my daughter hanging out on the beach in our bathing suits. I had given birth to my son almost a year before and was still wearing my maternity suit that I sported when I was HUGE pregnant (I’ll have to find those pictures. I’m not exaggerating). I guess somehow I had deluded myself that I still looked fine, just needed to shed a few pounds to fit into a regular bathing suit. That picture spoke volumes to me. I set my mind on losing weight and by December of that year I had not only gone down to my pre-pregnancy jeans, but whittled myself down to a weight I hadn’t seen on the scale since high school! I was determined to stay in shape because I not only looked AH-MAZING, but I felt so much better than I had in years and was not restricted by any of the choices in my wardrobe (which meant less money on clothes because I didn’t have to keep buying bigger sizes. I’m practical that way.)
Little by little the demands and stresses of everyday life caused me to slowly retire my healthy new habits, making incremental compromises here & there in my daily food and fitness decisions. Does that sound familiar? Where, like, before you know it you’ve slid back into your old comfortable habits and unfortunately, your uncomfortable body? Finding yourself thinking things like, “my pants are starting to fit snug,” or “Ugh! I’m feeling so bloated these days.” How many times have you been there? Too many to count, at least for me.
I became a health coach because I wanted to help others break the cycles that they find themselves in once and for all. Why would any one want to work with me? Because I know the struggle all too well...and it is REAL. Am I perfect? Nope, not in the least, but this is where the word journey comes in. It’s not one place where your GPS can announce to you that you’ve arrived. It’s a road that has many twists and turns, highways where you zoom by easily without any resistance, as well as roadblocks where you find yourself taking an unexpected detour. Sometimes, it’s a road that your car up and takes a dump on you, leaving you stranded and feeling helpless.
