When the body needs energy, it breaks down fat into fatty acids and glycerol. These fatty acids and glycerol are then circulated and utilized by muscles and other tissues. If the body takes in more energy than it expends, the excess energy is converted into fat and stored in fat cells, leading to weight gain and fat accumulation. As women age, they may notice an increase in abdominal fat, even if their weight remains the same. This can be attributed to the reduced circulation and slower metabolism that typically accompany the aging process.

Lipedema is a disease characterized by excessive and abnormally distributed accumulation of adipose tissue, which mostly affects the lower extremities. The following is a detailed introduction for you:
1. Main Characteristics
Abnormal Fat Accumulation: Fat accumulates in large quantities and abnormally in specific parts of the body, especially the lower extremities. Different from simple obesity, the fat distribution in patients with lipedema presents a unique pattern. It usually starts from the distal part of the legs (such as the ankles) and gradually spreads upwards to the thighs and even the buttocks, but generally does not involve the trunk.
Bilateral Symmetry: In most cases, lipedema shows bilateral symmetrical involvement of the limbs. That is, the symptoms of both legs are similar, and the degree of swelling and fat accumulation are comparable.
Texture and Appearance: The skin of the affected area is soft in texture, and usually does not show indentation when pressed with fingers (non - pitting edema). As the disease progresses, the skin may develop an orange - peel - like change, which is caused by the accumulation of subcutaneous fat and the pulling of the skin by connective tissue fiber bundles.

Lipedema: Troubles Caused by Fat Metabolism Imbalance
Lipedema is a chronic disease that mainly affects the lower extremities. It is characterized by abnormal and uneven accumulation of adipose tissue. This condition often presents bilaterally symmetrically, usually starting from the distal part of the legs and gradually spreading upwards.
Lymphedema: Swelling Caused by Obstructed Lymphatic Circulation
Lymphedema occurs due to a dysfunction in the lymphatic system, which leads to poor lymphatic fluid drainage. Excessive lymphatic fluid accumulates in the interstitial spaces, thereby causing local or systemic swelling.
