It happens. Keep in mind that after a day full of stress sometimes pushing your body into a hard workout is not the answer. Try yoga or a slow and steady longer workout.

Heart failure is pretty much what it sounds like—when the heart can’t pump and/or fill with blood properly, it can’t get enough blood out to the rest of the body. Heart failure can lead to life-threatening shock if the condition(s) underlying it are not addressed.

The word “vagus” means wandering in Latin. This is a very appropriate name, as the vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve. It runs all the way from the brain stem to part of the colon.

The sensory functions of the vagus nerve are divided into two components: the somatic components, which are sensations felt on the skin or in the muscles; and the visceral components, which are sensations felt in the organs of the body.

Sensory functions of the vagus nerve include: providing somatic sensation information for the skin behind the ear, the external part of the ear canal, and certain parts of the throat; supplying visceral sensation information for the larynx, esophagus, lungs, trachea, heart, and most of the digestive tract; and playing a small role in the sensation of taste near the root of the tongue.

Stress is a pretty big deal in modern society. Most of us spend a lot of time either feeling it, trying to relieve it, or both. But what IS stress?

Stress. Face it. Deal with it. You've got this.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused lots of panic and stress.⁠

Stress actually has a HUGE impact on your immune system. When your stress levels are high, your immune system starts to get compromised.⁠

One of the 5 senses. If you are trying to relax your brain, close your eyes for a few minutes. Even if your mind is still racing, shutting down the eyes decreases brain and body stress - whether you feel it or not.

You open your eyes and see the world, but are you conscious of the fact that you are doing so? You opened Instagram, saw this post, and now you're reading this caption. Hello, reader. I like your shirt. Your hair looks really good, too. That you've interpreted what you just saw and have taken it as a compliment is an example of visualization, a.k.a. "Hurrah! You can see things."

Visualization is something we take for granted. You open your eyes and expect the world to appear around you. Don't lie, you totally do. In fact, you weren't consciously aware you were seeing things until I just reminded you 10 seconds ago.The retina is a layer of nervous tissue in the interior of the eye, continuing into the cranium as the optic nerve. The white of the eye is the sclera, and the transparent part of the eye is the cornea. The iris is the pigmented portion (where we determine eye color), and behind the iris is a lens that focuses light to form an image on the retina (remember: the image on the retina is inverted!). Between the cornea and iris is a chamber filled with fluid called the aqueous humor, and between the iris and retina is a chamber filled with fluid called the vitreous humor.

I agree and I also used to teach kids and I allowed them to have a two word check in (light and dark). Not to just honor the light and beauty etc, but these kids are also holding in other parts of their humanity. The "negative" but very real feelings, experiences. My son taught me that I was not living in the real world. He was right. There is so much more going on and we must listen to our children. Otherwise, when you say "mindful" the buzz is all about the beauty, but what about what children at not saying. We must wake up and listen more. Dont try to gloss over the hard parts.

"Mindfulness" is a common buzzword these days, but new research shows that it has the ability to alter brain activity, enhancing both academic performance and mental health in middle schoolers.
