Ianessa Humbert: “This is the analogy I give my patients when they say: In the past I was told that food gets stuck because my flapper isn’t flapping, but I don’t understand how that works.” This is a great way to explain what the epiglottic inversion actually does during a swallow.”

FEES endoscopy stands for Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing.

It is a medical test used to evaluate how well a person swallows (called a swallow study).

🔎 What happens during FEES?
• A thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera (endoscope) is passed gently through the nose.
• The camera sits above the throat to watch how food and liquids move when you swallow.
• The patient is given different types of food and liquid (colored for visibility).
• The clinician watches to see if anything goes toward the airway instead of the stomach.

🩺 Why is it done?

FEES is used to check for:
• Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
• Choking risk
• Food or liquid entering the lungs (aspiration)
• Swallowing problems after stroke, surgery, neurological disease, or cancer treatment

✅ Advantages
• Done at bedside (no X-ray needed)
• No radiation exposure
• Can be repeated easily
• Shows vocal cords and throat structures clearly.

Here, I completed a FEES for beautiful Nadya, who had been singing since age 4.

I am so sorry, but I am cancelling all the visits today as I am sick and don’t want to spread this to you, guys. The main thing that is making my sick day better is this kitten we’re fostering and maybe will make ours 💖. Grateful for this furball keeping me warm today.

So important

So important

🚨 Important context first:
This article is a COMMENTARY, not an empirical research study. It presents authors’ opinions and interpretations. No new data were collected, no experiments were run, and no causal claims were tested.

The commentary claims that assisted typing methods—including Facilitated Communication (FC), Rapid Prompting Method (RPM), and Spelling to Communicate (S2C)—have been unfairly dismissed and should be “revisited” for research. The authors suggest that:

⏺️ Nonspeaking autistic individuals may have hidden cognitive competence.

⏺️ Motor and sensory challenges might explain speech limitations.

⏺️ Some individuals allegedly achieve independent typing after years of assistance.

⏺️ Past studies showing facilitator influence have been “over-interpreted.”

⚠️ Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is pseudoscience at its core, and this commentary does not change that.

📌 This article does not rehabilitate Spelling to Communicate.
📌 It does not overturn existing evidence.
📌 It does not meet the standard of science required to justify clinical use.

Calling for research is not the same as demonstrating effectiveness—and until independent authorship is reliably shown, S2C remains pseudoscience, regardless of how compelling the narrative sounds.

Professionals owe nonspeaking individuals validated AAC, not hopeful stories dressed up as scholarship.

🔍 Read critically. Labels matter. Evidence matters more.
