Feeling out of balance, anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, low energy, or not feeling present in your body? It’s understandable to be experiencing some or all of these symptoms while existing in this white-supremacist, patriarchal, capitalist country. It’s not our fault that traumatic things have happened to us. We can’t undo our past, but we can learn, practice, and embody new ways of being. We will do this work collaboratively as an act of resistance!

I utilize holistic therapy, a strength-based anti-oppression framework, narrative therapy, mindfulness, & emphasize community involvement to assist clients in identifying their own solutions forward.

I have over a decade of experience as a Social worker in: an inpatient Psychiatric hospital, multiple Detroit Community Mental Health agencies, as a re-entry case manager assisting folks transitioning from prison back into their communities, as a lead therapist at a Detroit homeless shelter, doing antiracism work with other white people, as a trained Restorative Justice Circle keeper, and most recently joined IYK as a worker-owner in 2024. I am a therapist with IYK, an unschooling/forest school Mama, emergent herbalist, and a community organizer focused on building abolitionist crisis response in Detroit with Motor City Mobile Wellness.

My therapy practice is rooted in healing justice principles, conceptualizing mental health treatment as a form of social justice work within a society designed to keep folks traumatized, oppressed and disconnected. Each of us possess inherent strengths and gifts and I aim to explore those deeply with you in a space where you feel safe and accepted for exactly who you are.

I believe that we chose to be here at this exact moment in history, and feel a deep commitment and responsibility to organize towards building a more revolutionary and compassionate network of care in Detroit.

I am a passionate, antiracist, womxnist, fat, black femme, therapist, working to heal generational trauma within families and communities. I recognize that individuals have work to do to improve the quality of their lives, but sometimes it’s not the person, but the system that’s broken. Sometimes one’s own humanity must be fully seen and validated before they can recognize the value that they hold in the world. I find great joy in going on these journeys with families, individuals, adults, youth and groups.

My treatment modalities include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Trauma-Focused CBT, Eclectic Styles, humanist and African-Centered approaches, and restorative interventions. Additionally, my unique style of antioppressive, Multicultural relationship building, allows me to work with community members with multiple intersecting identities.

One of the most important parts of therapy is having a connected and trusting relationship with your therapist. I approach sessions with empathy and curiosity, asking questions and providing thoughtful observations so I can get to know the true you and get a feel for what life is like in your shoes. My framework is person-centered, meaning that I see you as as the expert on yourself, and will tailor our work together to suit your preferences and needs. While our focus is on you, I also take into account the impact of your environment, and use an intersectional lens to explore how your identities shape your experience in the world. I appreciate the strength and vulnerability it takes to open up and share your true thoughts and feelings, and would be honored to walk alongside you in your journey, offering a supportive outside perspective to guide you in self-exploration, building coping skills, and moving from surviving to thriving.

A little about me: I am a Native (Ojibwa), q***r woman originally from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and a Licensed Master’s Social Worker (LMSW) in the state of Michigan. I received my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Michigan in 2019. During my MSW program and since graduating, I have worked with children and adults from many different backgrounds, struggling with issues including anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, self-harm/self-injury, and suicidal ideation. I currently work with adolescents and adults, and enjoy supporting LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent people.

Imani ya Kupinga (IYK), Michigan’s first cooperatively owned therapy practice, today announced a new event series in Detroit designed to build community among mental health practitioners and explore cooperative economics as a model for justice-centered care. The series, titled “Building Our Table: A Detroit Practitioner Series,” begins with a “Social Work Speed Dating” event on December 11, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at a fellow co-op business, (3546 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216).

Founded in 2021 by Danielle Flint (LMSW), as a Black woman-led practice grounded in intergenerational healing, Imani ya Kupinga (Swahili for “Faith in Resistance”) officially transitioned to a worker-owned cooperative in February 2025. This bold model disrupts traditional, hierarchical therapy structures by ensuring clinicians share ownership, resources, and decision-making power, creating an ecosystem of mutual support and accountability.

The upcoming event series marks a strategic step in IYK’s vision to expand its cooperative model and deepen its roots in the Detroit community. The practice aims to hire Detroit-based therapists over the next 6-12 months, with a goal of returning to majority Black worker-ownership and opening a physical office in Detroit within the next two years.

“The current mental health industry is often exploitative to both clients and caregivers. Our cooperative is a direct response to that,” said Danielle Flint, Founder and Co-op Member of Imani ya Kupinga. “We’re not just building a practice; we’re building a blueprint for what care can look like when it’s rooted in collective power, liberation, and community. This event series is an invitation for Detroit healers to imagine and build that future with us.”

The inaugural “Social Work Speed Dating” event offers a unique, low-pressure opportunity for Detroit-area therapists, psychologists, counselors, peer support specialists, holistic practitioners, and wellness partners to connect, share resources, and discuss pathways toward cooperative ownership. The evening will feature snacks, drinks, healing resources, and a sound meditation offering by

Imani ya Kupinga (Swahili for Faith in Resistance) was founded in 2021 by Danielle Flint, LMSW, initially as a Black woman-led, solo practice grounded in intergenerational healing and liberation. The name honors her mother (Faith), her daughter (Imani), and the ancestral wisdom that guides this work: Healing is resistance and the practice is her offering to her family, her community, and the futures we deserve.
Recognizing the limitations of traditional therapy structures, Danielle envisioned a cooperative model for therapeutic practice where clinicians share ownership, resources, and values. In 2023, she brought together a team of like-minded therapists, all committed to anti-capitalist, anti-oppressive, justice-centered and abolitionist frameworks. Many were colleagues from shared movement spaces, united by a desire to resist systems that harmed both clients and caregivers. They share a vision of resistance that transforms capitalist exploitation, white supremacy, and pathologizing frameworks by centering justice, abolition, collective power, and liberation.

Mental and emotional health are such important parts of how we care for each other in the wake of the COVID crisis and the midst of deep cuts to Medicaid. With fascism on the rise and civil rights being stripped away increasingly everyday, organizers and practitioners in the mental health ecosystem carry a heavy weight. Now more than ever, we need to care for, identify with, and remember that, WE ARE our communities. We are therapists, somatic healers, trauma healers, systems change agents, and we have much passion for justice. We are also of our communities. We are all impacted and need to be cared for and healed.

At Imani ya Kupinga, we believe healing is not just about treating symptoms. It’s about restoring connection, expanding imagination, and resisting systems that harm. Our services are intentionally structured to be accessible, culturally resonant, and rooted in community. We work with clients across the lifespan, honoring each individual’s unique identities, histories, and needs. Whether you’re seeking trauma-informed care, gender-affirming support, or culturally grounded therapy for your child or family, our team is here to walk with you. We also understand that healing looks different for everyone which is why we offer a wide range of therapeutic modalities, both virtual and in-person, and support clients in finding the right therapist fit.

We embrace the significance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to amplifying voices, spreading awareness, and fostering the understanding about a critical issue that affects countless lives across all ages, genders, races, ethnicities and social classes. This month serves as a solemn reminder of the need to confront the pervasive reality of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse, and the urgent need for consent education.

Survivors, we believe you, and we stand with you.
