If your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan is discontinued for 2026, you’ll have a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to choose new coverage.
The SEP typically runs December 8–February 28, giving you plenty of time to switch plans without losing coverage.
• Change by December 31 for your new plan to start January 1.
• If you don’t choose by then, you’ll usually move to Original Medicare on January 1 — but you still have until February 28 to enroll in a new Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.

I’m a licensed insurance agent and can guide you through your options to help you find the coverage that fits your needs.

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans may be HMOs, PPOs, Regional PPOs, or Private Fee-for-Service options.

They cover all Medicare Part A and Part B services, just like Original Medicare, but often include additional benefits such as wellness programs, hearing aids, and vision services. Medicare Advantage plans also typically feature lower overall cost-sharing and include an annual maximum out-of-pocket limit—a protection not available with Original Medic

If your plan is making changes that no longer fit your needs—like your doctor no longer being in-network or your prescriptions not being covered—this is the time to review your options.

Don’t wait. The deadline to make changes is December 7.

When to sign up for Medicare

Most people sign up for Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) when they're first eligible, typically at age 65.

It's important to sign up promptly to avoid gaps in coverage or late enrollment penalties. However, if you're already covered through an employer group health plan, it might make sense to sign up for Medicare later or delay Part B.

If you are age 65 or older and receive Social Security benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Part A.

Enroll on time: Sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) to avoid penalties. The IEP starts three months before your 65th birthday and lasts seven months.

Choose the right plan: Consider whether Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage is best for you. You can also talk to your primary care provider to see what kind of insurance they accept.

Consider cost-saving programs: Programs like the Medicare Savings Program (MSP) can help lower premiums, coinsurances, and deductibles.

Compare drug plans: Consider your priorities when choosing a drug plan. For example, if you take a lot of generic prescriptions, look for plans with low copayments or no cost for those drugs

Reminder - Carefully Read Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). It contains important modifications regarding your 2026 plan. If you're enrolled in a Medicare plan, your plan will send you a 'Plan Annual Notice of Change' (ANOC) each fall. The Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) provides beneficiaries with information about changes to their Medicare plans for the upcoming year. This includes any modifications to the plan’s coverage, costs, network providers, pharmacy networks, and additional benefits.

Medicare plan: Any alternative coverage arrangement to Original Medicare that provides your Medicare health or drug coverage. This term comprises all Medicare health plans and Medicare drug plans.
