Today, the Spokane County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the expansion of existing services in partnership with the City of Spokane for the innovative Sobering Triage and Transitions (STaT) program operated by Spokane Treatment and Recovery Services (STARS).
The goal of this partnership serves to expand access to more immediate treatment services for individuals impacted by the Opioid Crisis within Spokane County. The Spokane County Board of Commissioners initiated this critical expansion and has approved an additional $400-thousand of opioid settlement funds, for a total of $600-thousand of annual operation funding to continue and expand this critically needed service. The City of Spokane has joined this effort, committing an additional $400-thousand for 2026 to support the increased capacity.
Spokane County Commissioner Mary Kuney said this expansion effectively doubles the capacity of the treatment center and is another step forward in tackling the opioid epidemic. “Spokane County is making investments that will have an immediate impact on the community. Our goal is to fill key gaps in the behavioral health system and implement real solutions to address the urgent need for more treatment and services. Spokane County has heard the communities’ need for continued solutions to address the opioid crisis, and we acting swiftly and decisively” she said.
Spokane County Community Services Director Justin Johnson praised both jurisdictions for investing in services that will help those suffering from addictions to begin their recovery. “The successful expansion of the Sobering, Triage, and Transition (STaT) program marks a major milestone in Spokane County’s comprehensive response to addressing the opioid and substance use crisis impacting our region,” Johnson said. He added, “These investments ensure the community has seamless connection to immediate and long-term recovery support to ensure individuals have access to the services they need. Through building and strengthening regional partnerships, we are more effectively implementing coordinated efforts toward solutions that work.”
