‘Tis the season when stiff and achy joints seem to bother us more than when it’s warm outside. What you’re feeling is actually a physiological response happening within your fascia. Colder temperatures and reduced daylight influence the nervous system, prompting shifts in hormone levels. These changes affect fascial tension, tissue repair, and fluid dynamics. When we give in to the urge to hibernate and don’t move as much as we usually do, that discomfort only intensifies.

So what can help? Try prioritizing heat and hydration from the inside out: think sauna sessions, warm baths, myofascial release, and slow, intentional movement. These inputs help rehydrate the extracellular matrix, soften cross-links, and restore circulation to areas that tighten in the cold. And above all—keep moving. Whether indoors or outside, resist the pull of dreary days that make the couch a little too inviting.
