🗽 KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Peaceful Protest (U.S.)
✅ What You Can Do
• ✔ Protest peacefully in public spaces (parks, sidewalks, plazas).
• ✔ Speak freely, even if it criticizes the government.
• ✔ March on sidewalks without a permit (don’t block pedestrians).
• ✔ Record police in public (from a safe distance).
• ✔ Hold signs, chant, and hand out flyers.
⸻
🚧 What Requires a Permit
• Marching in streets or blocking traffic.
• Using amplified sound (megaphones, speakers).
• Building stages, tents, or setting up large gatherings.
✍️ A city can’t deny a permit because of your message — only for safety or logistics.
⸻
⚠️ If the Protest Grows Large:
• Police may redirect traffic or ask protestors to move.
• If ordered to disperse, they must clearly announce it and give time to leave.
• You can be arrested if you:
• Block roads without a permit
• Trespass on private property
• Disobey lawful orders
⸻
🛡️ Stay Safe & Prepared
• 📱 Record interactions (your right).
• 👥 Stay with a group.
• 🆔 Carry ID.
• ☎️ Memorize a legal support number.
• 🧘 Remain calm and nonviolent.
⸻
🚨 If You’re Detained or Arrested:
• Say: “I am exercising my First Amendment right to protest.”
• Say: “I want to remain silent. I want a lawyer.”
• Do not resist or argue.
• Do not give police your phone password — they need a warrant.
⸻
📌 Your Rights Are Protected By:
• The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
• Court decisions supporting free speech and assembly
