So I spoke to the DOH, and they are operating with about 40% of the budget they did last year. A narcan nasal spray dose costs them $24. The IM (intramuscular) injection costs $8 per dose. We have to switch over to IM from here on out.
I personally like the injectable better, because its more effective. I do understand there is some hesitation from folks around needles and injections, but I promise everyone can learn and feel comfortable using them to save a life! I will be hosting a training at the spokane valley public library for Narcan IM injection on August 17th at 12 pm (noon outside) and at 1 pm, and I will be disturbing lots of IM injection kits there. Please let me know if you are interested in this free public training and how many IM injectable kits you need! Thank you! ❤️
Here is the email I got from them today:
"Dear OEND Partner,
We are writing to inform you about changes to DOH’s Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND) program. Due to significant budget reductions, the following policy regarding your program’s naloxone ordering will be effective 8/5/2025.
Your program may order a maximum of 100 nasal naloxone kits per month.
This limit will be reflected on your program’s naloxone request form.
Any additional orders submitted within the same calendar month will not be fulfilled.

PLEASE NOTE: There is currently no limit on the number of intramuscular (IM) naloxone kits that your program can request each month. We recognize that 100 nasal naloxone kits per month may not be sufficient to meet your full programmatic request for nasal naloxone. We ask that programs consider distributing more IM naloxone to make up the difference.
Both IM and nasal naloxone are safe and effective; however, nasal naloxone kits cost 70% more than IM naloxone kits. Shifting our purchasing strategy to increase IM naloxone distribution will improve the OEND program’s ability to effectively serve all partners across Washington state.
OEND staff are available to support programs with training and technical assistance regarding these changes.
If you have questions about ways to increase IM naloxone distribution or would like a refresher training about how to use IM naloxone, please use this link to schedule a meeting with Sean Hemmerle, OEND Consultant.
If you have questions about budget reductions and naloxone ordering limits, please use this link to schedule a meeting with Chelsie Porter.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we navigate these changes to the OEND program. We appreciate everything you do to support the health of your communities."
