San Diego Lactation Equity Alliance

San Diego Lactation Equity Alliance SDLEA is dedicated to ensuring that all families in San Diego have equitable access to lactation support, education, and resources.

We strive to eliminate disparities and promote healthy lactation practices across diverse communities. The mission of San Diego Breastfeeding Center Foundation (SDBFCF) is to reduce socioeconomic disparities in breastfeeding support by increasing access to qualified lactation consultants for low-income families. We plan to accomplish this through: (1) subsidized lactation visits with International

Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC), (2) collaborations and trainings to improve culturally-relevant breastfeeding knowledge among community practitioners, and (3) providing scholarships and internships for culturally diverse women to support them in becoming IBCLCs.

World Breastfeeding Week 2025 begins now!
This year, we’re centering working parents—because no one should have to choose between their paycheck and their baby’s nourishment.

At the San Diego Lactation Equity Alliance, we’re committed to building a future where every parent has access to the support, time, and space they need to feed their baby successfully—at home, in the workplace, and in the community.

It's time to create real change. Let’s uplift policies, resources, and equity-centered care that make breastfeeding possible for all working families.

We’re excited to share that we’re in the works of planning a joyful community picnic to celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week! Mark your calendars for August 30th from 10 AM–1 PM at Civita Park and get ready for a time filled with connection, laughter, and love.

Why does this matter?

Black Breastfeeding Week was created to address the unique barriers, cultural narratives, and health disparities that Black families face. Black infants are still less likely to be breastfed, and Black mothers are less likely to receive the support they deserve.

By coming together in community, we honor Black breastfeeding stories, break down stigma, and create spaces where Black families feel seen, celebrated, and uplifted.

This picnic is more than just a gathering — it’s a declaration that Black families and their feeding journeys matter. It’s a chance to build connections, access resources, and simply enjoy being together in a safe, affirming space.

Stay tuned for more details on activities, partners, and how you can be part of this beautiful celebration. We can’t wait to gather with you!

👊🏿Juneteenth: Honoring Freedom, Advancing Equity 👊🏿
Today we honor Juneteenth — a powerful reminder of the struggle for Black freedom, dignity, and justice.

At the San Diego Lactation Equity Alliance, we recognize that reproductive justice, birth equity, and lactation support are all part of that ongoing fight. Black families have long faced systemic barriers in birth and breastfeeding support — yet they have also led movements, built communities, and preserved traditions of nurturing and resilience.

🖤 We celebrate Black lactation professionals, doulas, midwives, and parents who continue to shape a future rooted in healing, autonomy, and joy.

✨ This Juneteenth, we recommit to doing the work — centering Black voices, breaking down disparities, and making lactation equity real.

Fighting Forward: Defending Black Breastfeeding Support in a Shifting Policy Landscape

Policy changes are threatening vital support for Black breastfeeding families, with cuts to DEI initiatives, maternal health programs, and community-based organizations. These changes mean fewer resources for lactation support and culturally competent care, deepening health disparities for Black families.

But we’re not backing down! Let’s stay informed, strengthen our networks, advocate for change, and invest in Black-led solutions. Together, we can defend Black maternal and infant health.
